Help With Christmas TV Present

For my folks this year I am looking into getting them a new t.v. Shooting for something around 40" with 720p/1080i. It seems though all the new televisions, I have looked at are 1080p. They wont be using any hd-dvd players so I do not think 1080p is really needed; however, all the new 720p tvs seem to be running about the same price as some of the 1080p. I really do not know much about Tvs and if it is worth it to just get them a 1080p tv anyways but any info to help me decide this would be really nice. Trying to have a price range around $1400 to $2200 any leads on any good tvs would be very appreciated.

    Ohhh yeah, trying to look at LCD televisions so I can mount it on the wall in their room. If anyone has any good recommendations on some mounts that would be great too!

    I really like the Sharp 42" 1080p model, which is between $1800-$2000 right now. It has a good picture, and the cabinet design is very sleek as well. I've only installed one so far, primarily due to the lack of supply at the moment.

    They have Time Warner Cable and have all the HD Channels from that. Pretty sure most of them are 1080i with, maybe ABC sports being 720p. Not really sure but I do not think I have heard them thinking of moving to 1080p anytime soon.

    Consensus seems to be that 1080p over the air broadcasts aren't likely, at least anytime soon. However; once Blu-Ray and HD-DVD become more mainstream, which they are destined to do, at least one will become the format of choice and will eventually replace standard def dvd players. Picture quality is true 1080p and much sharper and detailed that what is currently available. Buying a 1080p set will somewhat future proof in terms of video for a while. I have, however, seen it suggested that 40" sets can't maximize the full benefits of 1080p, but I'd still get one. That is pretty much standard on new models. My Sony looks great, but it will run you a bit more than you're looking to spend. Do a search for past threads on LCD's and you will see some suggestions. Here's CNET's link to their top HD T.V.s, all formats. There are a good mix of plasma and LCD.

    I just bought a Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500 1080p LCD. Very happy with it so far.

    In my opinion Sony has the best looking LCDs out there - especially the XBRs. Samsung and Sharp aren't bad, but I think the glossy Samsung face is annoying and Sharp doesn't quite have the color reproduction of the Sonys (which I have been told they are using Samsung's screens).

    As for the mount, I am using the Sanus VM400. It will hold flat panels up to 80 pounds, and is an arm that allows the tv to swivel and tilt at up to 20 inches from the wall. It is not an easy install, though.

    I have heard many samsung owners very very happy with their LCDs. Do a search within the forums. This has Been a hot topic.
