Yamaha CDR-HD1500

Anyone have any experience with the CDR-HD1500?

The like the idea of having all my CD's stored (uncompressed) for convienient playback. I will not be using it to burn CD's, just as a jukebox.

I have also looked at music servers, but they are more expensive, and I have no use for the network capabilities.

    No one? How about the older models, the hd-1000 or hd1300? I beleve they are the same, except for the size of the drive.

    I couldn't pass it up at the price I was offered, so I ordered one, should be here tomorrow. Also have a 400GB drive to throw in it for more space.

    I have the CDR-HD1300. While I've not taken advantage of a lot of its features, I do like playback from it. However, one thing you MUST do is download the text editor software from Yamaha's website and buy a cable to connect your unit to your computer...it's MUCH easier to enter the CD data with a keyboard than with the remote.

    As for the HD...I would be surprised if it'll recognize the 400gb drive. I've read somewhere that the supposed limit of what it'll recognize is about 120gb or so. But, here's hoping it'll recognize it all!

    Already have several null modem cables for connection.

    The CDR-HD1300 is limited to 137GB. According to Yamaha, the CDR-1500 comes with a 200GB drive, and has been tested with up to 500GB. They recommend Seagate, as they have only tested that brand at 500GB. The spare 400GB I have is a Seagate and is on their list of supported drives.

    Well I got it yesterday. Yamaha apparently has updated the specs, as it came with a 300GB drive! That's enough for 469+ hours of uncompressed CD's, I only have about 300 CD's, most are 45-50 minutes long, so no need to upgrade the drive now. Should be set for a while.

    So far I am very impressed with the unit, especially for the $520 I paid. And no more changing CD's for casual listening.

    WilliamM2, there are quite a lot of us interested in installing larger-than-137GB hard drives on our CDR-HD1300s. Did Yamaha actually produce units with 300GB hard drives (in addition to the CDR-HD1500 with the 400GB) or was that an upgrade? Please share any information that you can about your unit.     The 1300 is limited to 137GB because of the firmware, like older computer motherboards, I don't think it can be done.

    The CDR-1500 is not limited, and I have read reports of successfull installs of 750GB drives. Mine came with a 300GB drive, I have read of others also getting 250GB and 300GB drives in their units. Specs still list 200GB, my guess is that they use whatever is cost effective at the time.

    Thanks WilliamM2, I misread your post and thought you purchased a CDR-HD1300 with 300GB hard drive. Yes, what you're saying is what I've understood. Do you know whether it's even possible to substitute the hd1500 controller in hd1300 (and with firmware perhaps allow larger drives)? Like many others, I like the great sound of the unit but, of course, wish I had more hard drive space. I hope you're enjoying your HD1500. thanks. r/James

    I think it's probably possible with just a firmware update. But I have never heard of Yamaha giving anyone (dealers included) updated firmware. That would be like a free upgrade to a newer model.

    Your best bet is probably to sell the 1300, and pick up a 1500. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but they have come down to around $500.
