Ok, what happened. Why'd my thread get deleted? And that before I could read the new responses?

I was asking about various P2P networks. I can't see how that's a subject worthy of suppression.

Because it's stealing (although most do it) and Polk Audio probably frowns on that being supported here.

Hahaha. That's your assumption. In my thread that was deleted, I explicitly said I wanted to download recordings of TV shows, and seeing as how you can copy them with a VCR or on you hard drive, I don't see how downloading them on a P2P network could be illegal.
Sure, those networks are used illegally, but that's not my intent. I want to download Monster Garage, Top Gear, I Love Lucy, Three's Company, Laverne and Sherly, etc.

Audiobliss, I know what you're saying I DL all my TV shows, I no longer use a VCR on my main system. It's all DLs.

What you want to do is illegal. Broadcasts are typically not allowed to be copied and redistributed. You can make a copy for yourself on a VHS for your own personal use, but it becomes illegal when you're getting them from other sources and others are distributing them. (This whole subject can be a bit of a gray area)audiobliss wrote:Hahaha. That's your assumption. Also, several posters in your thread made references to websites where they could download illegal shows, movies, etc...
This is a corporate website and forum. Discussing illegal movie and TV show downloading and listing URLs to websites that offer such items will be removed.
Also, many networks like ABC are offering their TV shows on their websites for free, so you may want to check that out. -

Hmm. While I think that's totally crazy, I'll just accept that it's true. But taping radio broadcasts is also illegal, if I'm not mistaken, but who here would let that stop them if they wanted to record something, say a Rush Limbaugh program?Kris Siegel wrote:What you want to do is illegal. This kinda reminds me of our neighbors. Well, they used to be our neighbors. They had a son my age, and we soon became best buds. But anyhoo, he loved Bonanza, but they didn't have a VCR. So, he loaned me a tape every week, and every week I would record Bonanza for him. If I'm not mistaken, he now has all but maybe two or three Bonanza episodes ever aired.
I don't see that downloading a recording of an episode of M* Garage (thanks for the warning...I had forgotten about that word...) is any different. And quite frankly, even if it is illegal, like recording the radio, I don't really care.
Now don't go off on a tangent and say my 'reckless disabandon for the law' means I'll soon be serving time in jail for who knows what offense.

first, it's reckless abandon
adn second, technically when you tape something off of the TV, you have the commercials on there too. when you download a copy, you DON'T have the commercials. this isn't the specific REASON it's illegal, but, if you think about it, how are teh networks going to make any money from their television programs if people like you (and me, frankly) just download them without commercials? ABC is really smart, they introduced free, completely legal downloading of their programming from their website - the only caveat being you have to use their player, which doesn't allow you to fast forward commercials
If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Haha. I didn't think that sounded quite right.bobman1235 wrote:first, it's reckless abandon

Ok, I have done alot of looking at the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act), which deals with all of this and downloading shows IS illegal (Though I'm sure that you could beat this if you downloaded a show you owned the DVD to).
But, in your defense, P2P networks are not illegal in any sense, so I would think that discussion of P2P without mentioning any illegal activities is ok but, all of that is of course in Polk's and only Polk's discressionGod shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8 -

Can't argue with that, ledhed. It is all up to Polk's discression.

Discussing P2P without mentioning illegal acitivities is okay and normally I would ignore it. The thread in question had several posters mentioning they were downloading specific movies from specific sites and some even listed URLs to sites that allowed you to download such material (the sites themselves were inappropriate because of some of the the content on them). That's what caused them to be removed.ledhed wrote:But, in your defense, P2P networks are not illegal in any sense, so I would think that discussion of P2P without mentioning any illegal activities is ok but, all of that is of course in Polk's and only Polk's discression -
Other thing is that people are paying premium to see channels like HBO. Your neighbour doesn't get HBO but you say it's ok, you will record "Sopranos" for him since it's his favourite show but he doesn't want to pay to see it. Nor does he want to purchase the DVD releases when they get out. That would be wrong.audiobliss wrote:Good point. I certainly hadn't thought of that.
I don't see it being wrong borrowing your copy of last nights show to someone if they would have had access to it on their own but just happened to miss the episode. But downloading shows on the network gives access to a lot of people that do not have those shows broadcasted. On the other hand it is wrong but hey, you and your service provider didn't pay for them. I'd love to see Top Gear and DTM but my only means to see them would be to download them and quite frankly I won't because I'm too lazy to do it, illegal or not.
