Donnie Darko, What is your take of the ending?

I was kinda lost with the ending. I have not listened to the Commentary track yet to help explain it, but I think he went back in time to Save his GF, so if he died then he would not meet his GF and his actions would not kill her...

Other people talk of an alternate universe...

Has anyone seen it? What do you think?
