Moving into the garage

I'm about 99% sure I'm going to move The Green Room into the garage.

It will be a stand alone structure inside the garage measuring 8'wide, 7'high and 15'long (rough dimensions). The Green Room is currently 10'x 8'x 12'. It will be a bit less in height and width, but it will give me the depth I want. I will use half of the garage. Big reason for doing this is having a dedicated HT room in a 3 bedroom house does not leave us with much space for anything else.

I plan on using 2x4's for all the framing, 1/2" sheet-rock and insulation in all walls.

If anyone has done this or has suggestions, I'm open to reading them.

Peace Out~:D

    Ron-

    Sounds Good, couple of questions:

How do you plan to heat the theatre?
Is the garage attached to your house?

Of course we will expect that you will be installing a marquis with lights on the roof.

Are you leaving the door in place so you can use it as a "drive in" as well? :)

    Ron,
8' wide? You're going to have to give up beer or else you'll never squeeze in there!

Seriously though, that seems awful narrow.

The garage is attached. I have a little stand alone heater that plugs in which will work fine for heating. Another plus is I will be able to install a portable A/C unit. I cannot install one in my current room as the unit would hang out the window in the front of the house. To cool the current room I need to open the windows which lets all the neighbors hear what I am watching.

I just ran quick measurements last night and am pretty sure I can get about 9' wide, but no more than that. Even at 8', my 3 seats right now only take up 6' so that will still leave me with 1' on each side. I'll go as wide as I can, yet still be able to park my wife's van in the garage.

I'll have a better idea today when I pull some actual measurements.

Is a carport an option? Just curious....

Man, I don't know. That's sounds awfully small in width and height. The room that I'm building for my 2-channel system is 12' wide, 11' long (before opening into an L-shaped room which adds another 11'), and will be 7-8' high (depending on how I do the ceiling). Even with a 12' width I could go for a few more feet, and that's only a 2-channel system. I'm really concerned with the 7-8' ceiling height. It certainly won't be great, but I'll live with it (and treat the crap out of it). I can't imagine you're going to get any sense of spaciousness with your sound between the narrow room and the short ceiling height.

Here's the final size. The room will be 9' wide, only 1' less then what I have now. The front half will be 7' high, once I clear the garage door it will go up to 8.5' high (where the seating will be). The depth will be 16', currently I'm a 12' deep. The new room will be a total of 1,116 cubic feet. The current room is 960cf. So, I will be gaining 156 more cf of space which is great.

Cool deal Ron! Very small though - not much width for that FP later on. I can't wait till I can upgrade (new house) so I can go to a 15' to 20' screen.:D
Garage - Hmmmmmmm - what an original ideal.
I think I may know someone who may have done this.
Been through the entire process and had alot of fun.
Heating - Cooling - false wall for garage door - wire running - insulating - fider sound boarding - lighting - painting - ect.
Can't wait to do it to a two car garage.

Actually Scott, it will be bigger than the current Green Room. Is your HT in a garage? As for the FP, my current room could not handle one because of the door into the room, so the garage HT will be better suited when the time comes. Half the fun of this hobby is doing all that you listed above. It's going to be a much nicer HT than what I have now knowing that can build it from scratch rather than around an existing bedroom.

Ganzo, the garage is attached to the house. I have a door from the garage to the house and then I will have a door to the new HT room. I might even to a double door set up for sound proofing.

I redheaded the 2x4's into the garage floor tonight. Dimensions are 9.1' x 16.3'. Tomorrow night, I'll probably start framing up the walls.

I'm concerned about your heating/cooling situation. I worry that a portable heater and a window unit are too unwieldy and noisy for home theater use, don't you? (What about the electric circuits, would the draw from the heater/AC interfere or introduce noise? Do you plan to install many new circuits?)

Would it be too difficult to install quiet electric baseboard heaters ("SLANT FIN" brand, you can find em at Home Depot) and some sort of small "central air conditioning" with quiet ductwork? Do you have central air in the main house? (I know you said you'd have to open the windows, so I guess not...) We have a window unit in a demo room here and it's really noisy and not too efficient. I actually went nuts and had expensive central air installed in my house expressly to cool the basement theater! I wouldn't recommend that, but it works.

Now you'll have the GREEN GARAGE!

Heating will most likely not be necessary. The HT will be a room within a room. The new room will be a stand alone structure inside the garage sharing only one common wall. The garage is insulated and the new HT room will be as well. Body heat and all those components and I highly doubt heating will be of any concern. But, if I do, those little electric units are fairly effective and very quiet.

As for the A/C, the small units are very quiet. I have a large window one I install during the summer months and on low it can barly be heard and it's about 7 years old. I'm sure the new ones are even more quiet. Besides, It cannot be any louder than the heat exhaust fan I'm using in the current room and having to open the windows. I do not have central A/C, where I live it's not necessary.

Circuits, lots of'em. I have plenty of room in my main breaker panel so I plan on running one 20 amp line for the components, one 15 amp line for lighting, one 20 amp for the A/C and one or two 15 amps for misc needs.

As for the name, it will change. I may call it "The Dark Room", cuz after all, it's gonna be all black inside.

Under system showcase. Room looks a little different now - two couches - rear couch is raised about a foot. I think there are some construction pics that show the early garage construction. ;)

    Kewel!

I'm really excited about this project. Lots of fun and being able to build it the way I want. Not sure what my plans are for seating. May keep the theater seats, but might go Lazy-boy's or couches instead.

My mind is going a million miles and hour right now thinking of all the stuff I am going to do.

    Picture this:
The whole garage is turned into a theatre but there is a parking pad on the floor where you can park. This could be really cool someday if you ended up with a little sports car.

Noticed your sonosub... any chance I saw those same pics on a site dedicated to sonosub construction?

Anyway.. I've toyed with the idea, using a Shiva...

How do you like the performance of your sub? Satisfied? Or merely satisfied for the money?

Not sure where you saw the pics. I only have them on my website.

The preformance is excellent, easily doubles what it cost. Very tight clean bass rolling off right at 20Hz. I'll never buy a commercial sub again. When the new HT project is complete, I'm going to build another, one that will get down into the mid-teens.

I doubt I will go the IB route for quite some time, but, depending on how the sub works in the new HT, that could change.

Last night the rear wall went up and hopefully tonight the front wall goes up. My goal is to have all the framing done by Sunday. Then, I can run all my electrical and speaker wires. I plan on wiring for 6.1 maybe 7.1. I'll get some pics up early next week or maybe by the weekend.
