Cripes, that's gotta be from LAST YEAR. You are "so 2001," man.

But "no talent ****-clowns" is right on the money. I was surfing by a couple times, and it's like a car wreck what passes for "music" or "talent" these days. It had to be a joke, it just had to be. I felt like I was either watching mannikins walk and talk or watching a mating display at the zoo's monkeyhouse. It was a celebration of ignorance, a festival of inanity, a carnival of senselessness (please stop me, I could go on and on about this)... I really don't mean to offend anyone but watching the little bits I saw was like watching the special olympics: everyone I saw was retarded. It's COOL to act like you're retarded now! Unbelieveable. I wonder how many of them were not faking their retardation?

And the topper was that awful "Guns N'Roses" mistake at the end. I flipped by while waiting for O'Reilly to get to a real issue, and I see Axel straining and struggling and pretending to be a singer. I mean, was anyone conned by this? I am so so embarrassed for him. It will be a long long time before I listen to "Appetite For Destruction" again (and I honestly think it's a masterpiece).

I am SO glad I don't buy into this crap.

But Christina, except for her face (from what I can see), was smokin'. Please DON'T post pics here. Just post links, man. Otherwise we'll be stuck here all day, revisiting this post...

God help our culture if this was any indication of the direction of things. God help rock and roll (which is pretty much dead, I guess, finally).

You know, I been thumbing through my cd collection.....Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, James Taylor, Eagles......oh, you get the idea. These no-talent **** clowns shouldn't even be in the same category, I'm SO disgusted right now. And that scrawny little punk, Eminem?? He didn't get enough **** beatings as a child I see.

AHHHHH, eff it, I'm off the soapbox.....Ima go play so REAL rock and roll.

Dave Barry had a column a few yrs ago about how kids don't form rock bands (guitar, drums, bass) as much as they did 10-40 yrs ago--the kind that take over their parents garage & annoy the neighbors. As bad as some (or most) of these garage bands are/were, at least they involve people trying to play something on an instrument & get better. So I'm wondering--what do they do now? Use processors of some kind to create sound effects & spend a lot of time working on visuals? Just wondering.

The highlight (only) perfomance I enjoyed was Sheryl Crow.....

    meestercleef,

I think you have hit a good point, one that I firmly believe holds true and that is that mainstream culture places MUCH more value in style over substance. Not that I am a Pollyanna that is naive enough to believe that it wasn't the case in the past but it is SO much more prevailent now than it ever used to be, IMO.

Eff it, I got my Bruce Springsteen cd's on....they always make me philosophical.

Old or new? That new stuff that he's conning you with is crap, straight, no chaser. CRAP! Just seeing him on MTV last night made me gag, once again.

It's like he was sitting around waiting for a national tragedy to happen so he could wrote some more of that "Born in The USA" crap. The man hasn't made a really viable album since "Darkness On The Edge of Town."

    CRAP!

But those five early LPs... Those are GREAT. Growing up in New York, nothing says summer drive thru the 'burbs like early Springsteen. And "She's The One" is a masterpiece.

I'd also argue that the River and Nebraska, content-wise were great albums.....my fave is Greetings from Asbury Park

Dudes. This is the sound of getting older. I still listen to the same Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album my father threatened to destroy on a daily basis. His voice is what I am hearing in the previous posts. However, I agree.

In terms of the cultural issues, we may be sounding like "back in my day . . ." geezers. But musically, my main issue, as noted in my post, is whether or not people play instruments & develop a style (maybe not the style I like) & continue to improve (even if they don't become classical pianists). Nihilism is not an invention of the current crop of 15-25 yr olds. But that's not what I was talking about.

Yes, there is & always will be a sh--load of good music out there. The subject was the stuff at the top of the American pop heap right now. However, I realize that if we were to enter a time warp, we could be hearing "Seasons in the Sun" or Air Supply or "How Much is that Doggie in the Window" at the top of the charts, so I'm not saying that the golden age is passed & there's no good music now & it was all great way back when. I don't know why I even got into this. I've never watched the awards, altho the performers can be heard elsewhere, of course. The only thing about the awards I like is the revealing outfits some of the women wear. And that stuff can be seen later on on websites or in mags w/out suffering thru the awards.
