    Eddie Van Halen.

Who could ever forget the first time they heard "Eruption" from Van Halen's first album. That album burst a style of playing that was unsuccessfully copied by many guitarists.

    Truly landmark!

Don't forget Jimmy Hendrix. Gotta love the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock.

Yep, SRV, Blackmore and Santana are favorites.

Oh yeah and no matter how much Limp Bizkit sucks, the lead guitarist (I forgot his name) is awesome. I knew he wouldn't put up with Durst for long.

Guitar players in no particular order:

    Michael Hedges
    Pete Townshend
    Jimmy Page
    Duane Allman
    Eric Clapton
    Jeff Beck
    Leo Kottke
    Adrian Legg
    Robert Fripp
    Bonnie Raitt
    David Gilmour

OK, that's eleven. So sue me.

Bass players in no particular order:

    Chris Squire
    John Entwistle
    Michael Manring
    John Paul Jones
    Duck Dunn
    Trey Gunn
    Tony Levin
    Tina Weymouth
    Jaco Pastorius
    Stanley Clarke

OK, that's eleven, too. Sue me again.

By the way, Russman, you might be interested to know that a lot of the bass stuff on Pink Floyd albums is actually David Gilmour. See the book "Saucerful of Secrets," by Nicholas Schaffner. Gilmour could get it done faster in the studio. Waters, according to the book, used to come to Gilmour and say, "Thank you for winning me another bass player award." And I gotta say, as someone who's heard Waters play live, it wasn't hard for me to believe the book.

But come on, folks! Can't leave out DRUMMERS! I'll start:

    John Bonham
    Keith Moon
    Simon Phillips
    Zak Starkey
    Steve Gadd
    Bill Bruford
    Buddy Rich
    Bill Kreutzman
    Maureen Tucker
Ringo Starr (I kid you not -- go back and listen to him)

Can't believe nobody mentioned Johnny Winter & Rick Derringer. The album "Live Johnny Winter And" with Winter/Derringer on guitar, Randy Jo Hobbs on bass, and Bobby Caldwell on drums kicks a$$ as a rock/blues recording of cover tunes. Sound quality is not the greatest (it was released in 1971), but still kicks.

the bassist in Bela Fleck is actually Victor Wooten. Bela Fleck is the banjo player.

Duh, I have no idea why I didn't write Victor Wooten in the first place. I guess I just saw the band's name and didn't think twice about it :)
