Circular factory crossover boards used in early monitor series.

A friend recently acquired a set of Model 7s with one cracked pcb. Since I'm working on improving my KiCad skills, I decided this would be a great time to try out one of the many online PCB-making sites.

Do the large copper areas on the non-component side serve any purpose other than a common, conductive plane on which to connect leads from multiple components, or do they serve another purpose related to heat or inductive dissipation?

Are they purposely generic to allow different combinations of components depending on model?

Seems like it would be easier to just point to point wire the crossover, but I guess that would take the fun out of your pcb making experience.

Large heavy copper traces are always a good idea on a pcb.
