Tweeter replacement options for Monitor 10b

We know for a fact that polk used a soldering iron to make the hole. It was a Polk engineer who belonged to the forum years ago that in fact confirmed it.

yeh right 🤣 I got 6 pair of those tweeters with holes right here not a single one burnt! you guys have absolutely no proof except from an ad from a 1970 magazine. Seems you guys will believe anything 🤣
I posted a picture, post a picture prove me wrong. Remember a picture is worth a 1000 words."Equality is a myth to protect the weak. Some of us are strong in the Force, others are not. Only a fool believes otherwise." - Sith Proverb. -
And still think it terrible advice to tell some else to do it when you've never done it yourself."Equality is a myth to protect the weak. Some of us are strong in the Force, others are not. Only a fool believes otherwise." - Sith Proverb.

Time to get back on your meds.
Again, I see words and no proof. Your feeble attempt to be funny proves nothing.
Meds as old as you are? Trust me you win there big guy!! No way anyone here is on as many as you!!
Post that pic of you burning that tweeter hole we all want to see that 🤣🤣"Equality is a myth to protect the weak. Some of us are strong in the Force, others are not. Only a fool believes otherwise." - Sith Proverb. -
If you burn a hole in a SL1000/2000, it sounds just as bad.Don't take experimental gene therapies from known eugenicists.
-
If you want you can make a small hole in the center of the dome using the hot tip of a pen style soldering iron, which is how Polk did it.
You want to be funny? That's funny you would recommend to someone to do that, and you've never done it yourself.
That's laughable. Got more jokes ?"Equality is a myth to protect the weak. Some of us are strong in the Force, others are not. Only a fool believes otherwise." - Sith Proverb. -
Boy, that really got you butthurt, didn’t it? 😳

That’s not how sharing of information works, and you should know that. We’ve all seen, researched and experienced worthwhile things that we’ve not personally done. I’ve never personally glued magnets on Polk MW drivers, but I KNOW the process, and I recommend it to people that need to do it. I’ve never personally installed heat tape on an exposed wellhead, but I’ve recommended that people do it when it’s prudent.
I don’t know whether you are being intentionally obtuse just to annoy people, or whether you are just stupid. You lost all credibility with me when you attacked @mhardy6647 . Doc is quite frankly “the best of us” - a true ambassador of the forum that has NEVER openly attacked another member of the forum. There are plenty of us here that are a$$ holes (myself included) that often deserve to be attacked - but not him. It’s a shame really, because you appear to have a bit of skill in a few areas. But you’ve alienated almost all of the people here that could actually help you, and your petty shouting and snide insults will echo into the void, along with any request for knowledge or assistance.“Human beings are born with different capacities. If they are free, they are not equal. And if they are equal, they are not free.”

@daddyjt wow.. I actually do my own stuff, look at my speakers I've posted lot pics, unlike you. People like you are a joke. You hang around a speaker forum and have no real experience, truly sad. And to top it off giving people bad advice. You should be ashamed.
Funny how you guys all pile up and call people names like little kids. If I annoy you its most likely because maybe you're a loser that resorts to name calling?
And yes, your right, your ambassador of the forum doesn't openly attack others. He hides behind others and throws stones like a coward.
When YOU alienate people like me that do work on their speakers then the only ones left will be goof balls like you. No one care about a guy like you that doesn't work on speakers in a speaker forum.
BTW - after all name calling no one proved me wrong 🤣Post edited by DeRod on"Equality is a myth to protect the weak. Some of us are strong in the Force, others are not. Only a fool believes otherwise." - Sith Proverb. -
Ok, I’ll bite - this is my bench. 4 band Rigol digital scope, HP 8903B distortion analyzer, twin HP 400EL voltage meters, an HP 3468B meter for fine measurements (phono stages), ATTEN signal generator, and my trusty Flike 87V meter. The bins and organizers visible are just a small sampling of my parts inventory. My iPad is on the bench next to my current project (Carver TFM 55x) with your post pulled up to verify it’s MY bench as it currently sits. What’s YOUR bench look like? What test equipment do YOU use?

I did my last cross-overs on my kitchen bar drinking a beer and they still look better than anything you've done 🤣 I could do some serious damage with a setup like that 🤣🤣
I'm just goofing on you. That's a nice set up, much nicer than mine. I don't have a ton a space where I live. Why don't you do something cool and impress us all.
Carver amp nice. I was just playing around with a Marantz 7 preamp clone I built and just biased my adcom the other day."Equality is a myth to protect the weak. Some of us are strong in the Force, others are not. Only a fool believes otherwise." - Sith Proverb. -
The last project I did was a repair/refresh of a Mark Levinson 331. Although in all honesty, I did most of the work on my son’s ping pong table, as the amp was physically too big for my bench to accommodate…. I’m currently refreshing the Carver TFN 55x on the bench, and repairing a faulty factory mount of the mag coil.

Too bad you sometimes negate it when you go out of your way to (self admittedly!) make a$$hole comments and snide remarks (especially towards someone new??). What is the ratio that is acceptable where it should be ignored?George / NJ

I don’t hate you - seriously. The group here is actually great, if you are decent and respectful. You won’t find a more generous audio group on the internet (and I am/have been a member of many) than you have found right here - generous with time, knowledge, parts and sources. But when someone comes in belittling the Polk brand and their products, then openly attacking members, people are going to get riled. Perhaps your comments were in jest, and that’s one of the shortcomings of this format - no visual cues and real-time ability to adjust delivery often lead to harmless ribbing to come across as mean spirited attacks.
Even though many of us do not currently have Polk products in out systems, we all have owned Polk at some point - and many of us have fond memories of those entry level speakers that transformed how we listened to music, and set us on the journey we are on still to this day, with the systems we love and enjoy.
So take a breath, reset, and when your speakers are done, tell us what you like about them. You’ve put a lot of work into them, and to be honest, they look pretty damn good.“Human beings are born with different capacities. If they are free, they are not equal. And if they are equal, they are not free.”

Hi Folks. Just catching up on my first post here…seems to have generated some spirited discussion - which I will gently side-step.

The beautiful Danish-made tweeters arrived. The ebay seller packed them so well it restored some of my faith in humanity.
I used a gator clip to help dissipate the heat when I de-soldered the tabs. (Thank you for the tip, @Gardenstater) My solder-sucker helped get them clean enough that the M10 connectors slipped right on.

Before installing them I threw them on my meter and they were pretty close to each other. I don’t know where they “should” be - but from a quick scan of other threads this seems reasonable?

I’m going to forego the solder-iron home-brew aperture puncture procedure because I’m pretty sure I’d mess something up and there’s enough sadness in the world as it is.
Here is one of my the M10Bs with the peerless in place. I think they look pretty nice, and they were a precise fit replacement for the SL1000s.
I’m not sure if the following images are helpful, but I thought I’d include them for reference. I threw my calipers on the tweeters and got some rough measurements. The ebay seller hinted that there might be a dimple under the label in the center of the magnet assembly, and I can feel it. I tried to get the caliper to approximately where I could feel the dimple.
Thanks to everyone for your help and advice. I’ll put these through their paces (running Pat Metheny through them now) and report back. I know the crossovers need attention, so if I get that completed before end of year I’ll follow up with that update as well.

Those Danish made ones always seem to have a nice semi gloss black coating on the bezels and a post sandblasted(?) yellow zinc chromate plated finish.
One of my oldest ones with a date on it is a #25143577, probably made in USA. Flat Black bezel, smooth silver zinc plating.

Picture before I replaced the magnet screws with button socketed heads. They were #8-32. I wouldn't be surprised if yours are metric. My back plate smooth silver, no dimple, no flats.

Older one with illegible date code after button heads........some of the paint was so old it flaked in the process

Apparently your working SL1000 is worth as much as $60 plus shipping and tax 🤣 I wish I could've found those torx black oxide button heads that Polk used. I was only able to find stainless which I didn't want.

Interesting, @Gardenstater. I don't have any plans for the pair I have, especially since one of them is "toast." Can they even be rebuilt?

The only thing that I would recommend would be converting them to RD0198 or RD0194. I doubt they would sound better than the Peerless but it would be an interesting experiment if you were so inclined.George / NJ
