Cable connection from preamp to es8

I'm using a preamp with the hpf set at 120, and a recommendation to use the subwoofer lpf to manage the sub out signal (meaning the LFE connection of the es8 can't be used), should I use a cable that has a stereo connection to both L/R ports on the es8, or just a single connection to the left rca port? The sub-out port on the preamp is mono.

Why are you using a ported sub for music?

  • I'm not sure I understand your reference to a ported sub.

When I say port I'm referencing the rca connections on the es8 subwoofer and on the preamp.

    I'm using a 2.1 configuration comprised of es10's with the es8 subwoofer.

The es10 speakers are on the small side and don't reproduce bass that well, hence the subwoofer, with a high pass filter on the es10 speakers and a low pass filter set on the es8 to control the frequencies passed from the preamp's mono rca output port.

My question about the cable is about the best cabling option to the es8. A single rca from the preamp's only rca output to only the left rca port of the es8, or a cable with two RCA connectors connecting to both the left and right rca ports on the sub.
  • Hello,
Welcome to Polk's forum. That should be a good sounding combination! The answer is that a single connecting cable from the sub-out connection to either the left or right line level in on the sub works fine.

There are basically two types of subs, sealed and ported. Your sub is ported, the port is the big round hole on the front. Ported subs work best for home theater use. Sealed subs work best for music because the bass is tighter, less boomy than a ported sub.

Ahh, you are talking construction and I'm talking connections.

I got a subwoofer small enough to be a match for my small bookshelf speakers that fit the small room in my apartment where they were being set up.
This subwoofer has enough controls that I can get the bass I want without disturbing my neighbors and getting complained about to my landlord.

As far as I know Polk doesn't currently make any sealed powered subwoofers.

Do you have any input to my initial question?

As for the connections, SeleniumFalcon's is solid.

For a little bit more money this has a smaller footprint and is a far better sub. You can even control it on your mobile. No affiliation.

Thanks for the input, I do appreciate it, but my issue is I bought this equipment for my kitchen in a 150 year old nyc apartment kitchen that is 12x15 and where people already complain about noise from tv speakers. I've sized the sub, both wattage and woofer dimension, based on my living space, and am quite happy with the sound. I've already had neighbors mention to me the volume level, and have adjusted my listening accordingly.
Noise complaints are grounds for eviction, so...
But I do appreciate your recommendation. I actually looked at it prior to purchasing what I have, but it's too much for the space and situation. Thanks.
