The 4th pair of speakers I've added to my collection this last week lol!

These nice condition little monitor 5s were a pure impulse buy, add came up on FB and it was inline from my wife's work back home.

I had her pick them up and now i have to figure out another system haha! I ran out of amps/sources 2 pairs back, I may try a modern all in one class D setup with this pair and see how it goes.

Upgrades wise I'm going to do the standard cabinet mods, throw two SL3000s in from the 1.2TLs when their 198s get here, and I may upgrade the crossovers myself with reasonable parts pending if I like how they sound.

Setup I had in mind was a semi near field in a room with 6-10 feet away from all walls and 20+ foot ceiling. Something different basically.....

That's a Monitor 5jr Plus Series II. Also, all the Series II Monitors used the SL2500 (except the Monitor 4) which is different from the SL3000 and not perfectly interchangeable (couldn't hurt to try). Heck, the RD0198 is the upgrade from both of them so try it.

Thanks for that! Was a good read

I finally caved into curiosity and set them up today, had to Jerry rig the cables but eh....it's fine.

They actually don't sound half bad! Soundstage is that of normal speakers but I'm getting some depth, imaging is okay at the dead center but everything else is just stacking on the speakers L/R.

With the Fathom helping the low end this is not at all a bad experience, I'm going to give them 5-10 hours to loosen up since they haven't been used in a decade. To be clear though these DO NOT have any low end on their own nor did I expect any, it's not the like 1Cs that can send a subsonic wave though the room that is felt rather than heard.

The SL2500s are WAY better than SL2000s stock to stock IMO

If I was to "complain" about anything it's that they are lower SPL at a given setting than the SDA1s and I'm not confident really driving them because of how much excursion I'm seeing at 28% requested volume. Don't want to hurt them and all that....getting 72-76 db at my listening position about 10 ft from them

Next step is full cab mods to see how that helps my imaging and details, then VR3 crossovers to give them a chance against $3k modern bookshelves

Nice setup. I'd suggest ditching those spring-loaded terminals if you can. The 2500's are no slouch. Tired X-overs will definitely veil them. The MW's and PR's need Dynamat/butyl rubber treatment on their baskets at the least. BH-5 or similar behind the mids, and if you're brave, full-monty foamed frames and phase plugs will put them in $3K monitor league.

  • Oh I definitely plan on getting them replaced with proper posts, ditto on all the mods other than the phase plugs. I'm not certain I want to do that because it stops the sleeper effect haha!

Crossovers are almost certainly tired, they sound like my original 1Cs vs the modded pair. Not unlistenable but not drawing me in

My fear now is that I will be disappointed in these when I move them off my main system to something else even with cab mods. It would suck to mod them, run them, like it a lot to then be disappointed running them off a class D integrated vs the main setup.

I don't want to spend stupid money on another front end and was targeting more simple/streaming focused. Think Bluetooth speakers that don't suck

I run my modded 5B's off a Class D TPA3255 amp in the shop. They do not disappoint.

Good to hear and funny enough those were what I was looking at using, nice to know someone is using one who likes the result

  • Wife verdict is that they are solid enough to keep in a room, she likes them even though she says the main speakers are incomparably better in terms of engulfment and images.

Hopefully after mods she will have praise for the M5s past "they are really surprising for such tiny speakers"

Cool. If imaging is on your radar of important things as in getting the speakers to disappear more, and off axis listening I would not (after my personal experience with it) skip the phase plugs.

Off axis isn't too much of a thing for me, I prefer to sit in a very specific seat etc but I would be useful for just background music etc.

Speakers disappearing is always desired, it's one of a few reasons I like the SDAs so much

I left off better tonal quality of highs, where the fundamentals are produced by the midwoofer. For example, high hats sound like a more natural tsssss.
