Found a second set of 1Cs for sale in upstate NY, seller had already swapped tweeters and rebuilt the crossovers with sonicaps/mills. Friend of mine was off at at wedding south of Boston and I had him pick them up for me, should have the new speakers to my place near midnight or so!

Now I have two sets! My originals can be left undisturbed and the new pair will be fully modified with all the approved mods and culminating with VR3 crossovers.

They are in decent shape, some wear here and there and appear to be older than my original set by a lot. Lower end cap looks like solid wood?

Some pictures of the wear etc, how does one clean the drivers? Is that one driver suspect with the discoloration near the leads? Also included an "SDA cable" and looks like a set of hammer in feet. Guess I have no excuse not to spike them...grills were redone at some point too.

That's veneer. The nail on feet are stock.

Drivers looks stock, clean with Windex. Spray the Windex onto a soft cotton cloth and wipe in a circular motion.

The white stuff should come off with a little Windex on a Q-tip.

    Crappy SDA cable.

    Thanks, will do so.

I'm using my stock cable now, they sound substantially superior in all aspects to my stock ones. Very happy with the purchase so far, I may redo the veneer as that's the only thing bothering me.

What spikes are commonly used for these? My biggest "problem" now is to figure out where I'm going to put my old pair, I don't have a proper secondary amp for them lol!

Looks fancy, is the goal to lift the speakers off the carpet? I would have about an inch of air gap with those, I'll order a set if that's the intent.

    Thanks!

Speakers sound great in all aspects so far as well, A/B comparison is impressive to experience how much better the recap and new tweeters are. Friend of mine who went to get them for me ended up staying 4 hours longer than intended just listening to tracks again

That would be part of the goal. You definitely don't want them resting on carpet and those spike tips appear sharp enough to pierce the carpet/padding.

Okay will do, my basement has a subfloor not concrete under the flooring if that matters at all for my setup.

I'll be totally honest and admit I've never really bothered to take my personal setup too seriously till last year so I'm still learning what I should do as far as room setup is concerned. I know bad need room treatments etc...

Not really, the main thing is to get them off the carpet/padding and on solid ground.

Wife test passed it would seem, she is in tears and goosebumps lol!

Plus side she is pressing for me to hurry up and find a mint set of 1.2TLs and fully mod them, I warned her I need to finish the room treatments etc first....

Don't pass up a pair of 2.3TL. Many, including myself, prefer them over the 1.2TL.

I'm trying to find ANY perfect condition 2.3TLs or 1.2TLs but it's just difficult and I don't want to have to drive crazy far/pay stupid shipping prices lol!

These were bought solely for the ability to not have to modify my originals and still hear a "refreshed" SDA to make sure it's what I like before dropping the cash on fully modded SRS.

I'm realizing that, I keep looking for a pair as cosmetically nice as my original SDA1s but they are literally mint.

At this point I would I accept driverless cabinets if they are perfect cosmetically lol! That or I'll need to cave in and just accept that I'll have to refinish them and just buy a pair already

  • Made a few changes to the overall system recently, experimented with positioning and room treatments to further refine and sharpen the imaging and soundstage.

Found that when setting up where it sounds best in those aspects the overall sound is lacking in low end excitement/felt impact. Ended up buying a JL fathom F112V2 to solve that issue, I tried a bunch of subs from my local store but none of them other than the fathom could truely disappear. It still took me over a week to get it perfectly synced up though, and I now have to re-mount the ceiling fan and front light fixture as they react at 80hz

Local pair of SRS2s and 1.2TLs came up, I now get to A/B/C the 1Cs vs the big dogs in a few days!

Also going to try and snag a pair of 5jrs with the SL2500 and 5jrs with no PR and SL2000s, I think the SL2500 pair would be nice to put in one of the smaller rooms here and the smaller ones will be going into my friends 5.1 system as surrounds

    Sanity check time.

So if I am understanding the wiring diagrams for the 1.2TLs correctly it should be possible for me to use an MC402 to drive the midbass/sed networks and a MC501 for each channels tweeter network correct? I want to play these for a while until my crossovers are done being built with bi-amping in play if possible, if not I'll just run them jumpered off the MC402.

The tweeters don't care about common-ground. But how are you going to cross-over the frequency-range from the (common-ground?) bass/midrange amp to the non-common-ground tweeter amps? Do you have an external crossover to plug-in before the power amps?

I don't understand the question, I am not using the rear jumpers on the speakers so the upper range circuits should be isolated already

Yes. The tweeters would be isolated. Now how do you control the volume balance between bass/mid, and treble? Those amplifiers almost certainly have different gain.

You're not bi-amping without active crossovers.

Why not? The pre-amp has lines to each of the amps and they have their own cables leading to each section of the speakers, the Mcintosh system is currently running speakers in that exact configuration so I don't see the issue as long as I use the 402 for the midbass sets of the speakers since they need common ground for now.

Gain is all done via the pre-amp since everything on the pre side is balanced outputs and controlled for gain via the pre since it has 6 XLR (3L 3R) balanced outs
