Dickey Betts, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, exits the funeral of Gregg Allman at Snow's Memorial Chapel, June 3, 2017, in Macon, Ga. Guitar legend Betts, who co-founded the Allman Brothers Band and wrote their biggest hit, “Ramblin’ Man,” died Thursday, April 18, 2024. He was 80.


MACON — In the hours after Allman Brothers Band member Dickey Betts died, word of his passing hadn’t yet spread to tourists visiting the Big House, the Tudor-style mansion-turned-museum where the group once lived and, half a century ago, birthed some of its most celebrated music.

As the story goes, Betts, a guitar-playing extraordinaire and Southern Rock pioneer, wrote “Blue Sky” in the living room and, in the kitchen, crafted the band’s biggest commercial hit, “Ramblin’ Man,” late one night. “Or,” as museum director Richard Brent put it, “early one morning.”

This Middle Georgia city famous for its music holds dear the stars it has reared. In ways, it is as if the Allman Brothers never departed. Reminders and relics of the band and its members are on street signs, on walls, in the H&H restaurant, where proprietor “Mama” Louise Hudson took a shine to the fledgling rockers and allowed them to pay for their meals when they could.

Rose Hill Cemetery is 50-acres of history, art, nature and stories
Opened in 1840, Simri Rose, a horticulturist and designer -- who was instrumental in the planning of the city of Macon -- planned Rose Hill Cemetery in return for being able to choose his own place of rest amongst the beauty. It was a frequent hangout, as well as artistic inspiration, for the Allman Brothers Band!

Duane, Gregg, Butch Trucks and Berry Oakley are interred here and many continue to visit and pay their respects to these legendary musicians here today.



Brothers Duane and Gregg Allman are buried, alongside Oakley, in Rose Hill Cemetery not far from
where the Ocmulgee River wends beneath I-75′s junction with I-16.



Little Martha Monument - The song, "Little Martha", first appeared as the final studio track on the Allman Brothers Band's fourth album, Eat a Peach, released in 1972. The track was recorded in October 1971, a few weeks before Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident.

Ramblin Man sure is a great song you wrote!

I played their albums as much as Lynyrd Skynyrds albums. They seem to go together quite well back in the good dope days.

I lived 20 miles from town so I had time to listen before work and coming home. The weekends, well, country life was pretty good.

Also, I lived way out in the country in Va. and would just drive around with a friend drinking a few and listening to music of the 70s and talking memories and plans as to what's up for get-togethers with others.
