Finished the layaway on my new turntable!

Options
Just made my last payment on my new turntable… woohoo! Took me 4 months but it’s finally all mine. Meet the new table - the VPI Black.

Now to decide on my cart.

Friggin excited to add to my system… this was something I wanted to add to my experience/journey.

    Yeah definitely
The antithesis to my Avenger Ref.

Gonna keep both of at all possible, will have 2 different carts so I can experience the two.

I am liking the idea of the Direct Drive in addition to the Rim drive.

Soundsmith or My Sonic Labs or Air Tight or Koetsu. I also ran across the Phasemation and Etsuro.

I know audio analyst has the Etsuro Gold

Myles B Astor just reviewed the Phasemation 5000 favorably.

Mike Lavigne has the Koetsu Coralstone… I am envious of the Jade.

My dealer Reference Analog recommends My Sonic.

Some day I'd like to hear a Koetsu cartridge. Unfortunately, the audio equipment stores near me only offer the usual stuff from Ortofon and Rega. I'm curious what you are using as a phono preamp with your new VPI deck.

The new VPI Black is my 2nd table. My first is the VPI Avenger Reference. I’m lucky that my phono has 2 inputs.

It is the Audio Research Reference 10 phono.

And some still say DD is an outdated concept compared to belt drives…
    My vintage DD’s say otherwise.

    Beautiful table.
Would love to hear the new direct drive tables.
I’m sure with modern tech they surpass the dd’s of yore.

I’m keeping both, Atleast that’s my plan.

Quick switch between one and another on the phono. Will distribute the wear also.

Congrats, Joey! 'Layaway'...wow, haven't heard that term used in awhile, and definitely not with high-end audio gear. Layaway was a term normally reserved for buying Christmas gifts at K-Mart, or the like. But from a business perspective, it is a much better option than 'interest-free financing'...not that you are much of a credit risk. Sorry for the diversion...that is just the accountant in me coming out.

Regarding the turntable itself - assuming the HW-40 Black Edition - it's interesting to see VPI pivot (pun intended) towards gimbal tonearms. They were pretty heavy in the uni-pivot camp for awhile. Looks like this one has anti-skate as well, so that's a plus :)

It is hard to argue against a good DD design, especially when it is all-manual, with no auto-functions to add un-wanted (or needed) mechanical noise. Funny how things come full-circle after so many years.

    Anyway...enjoy, Dr. V!
