Opinions on the Polk Monitor 70 Series 2?

How would these fair against my vintage 15TLs? Are they a decent basic speaker for movies and music?

If you put tens of thousands of dollars into this hobby to make a pair of Polks sound great, they will (to most people). Some people are just never satisfied with what they have after an endless search. IMHO I would not start that quest with the RTA's but to each his own. You could do worse.

Search the forum All these speakers you're asking about have been talked about ad nauseam over many years and it's all on here.

    You're using an AVR? Yikes.

Now I don't even need to know what your source is because it doesn't matter. You won't ever be hearing what a speaker is truly capable of if that is your amplifier. Sorry.

I am awestruck by the depth of information granted to me from the wise elders of this forum. I feel like I am ready to make my decision now that this wealth of knowledge has been bestowed upon me. I started out knowing virtually nothing about the Polk Monitor Series 70 2.'s However, with all of the guidance provided I feel as if I know them better than I know thy self. Here I sit with tears of joy.

I've had the Denon 3808ci, I'm very familiar with it's abilities. While it is a much older AVR and may be one of the last good Denons. You must admit it came on to the market in 2005 or 06, I had to use a Carver TFM 25 on the front two channels to get decent sound in two channel stereo. Without the amp my set up sounded a little flat and shrill on my set up. Have you ran the room correction software for the denon?

This Denon has more than enough power to run almost any speakers with much to spare.

So power ratings measured with test tones are the only thing I should be considering when determining the quality and performance capability of an amplifier?

The Denon receivers from that era were deliberately engineered to sound fairly bright and exciting for home theater purposes. They still are. Matching a bright sounding receiver with speakers using metal dome tweeters is usually going to result in a harsh/bright sound. Some people like it though. A silk dome tweeter in a speaker will usually produce sound that's perceived as "better" or at least smoother to most people. A Marantz receiver would be a better choice, in my opinion, for two channel use if a receiver is all someone desires.

Yes I thought they did a great job for home theater.

@15TL I couldn't listen to them in direct mode to bright. I used the room correction setup mode which I thought always did a pretty good job of taming the room acoustics. I would also get into the EQ part and tame the highs a little for some stuff.

Mostly CD. Let me guess, you love vinyl. You do know vinyl is one of the worst mediums for music playback right? Is trying to fit in with trendy hipsters really worth crippling your gear?

Both CD and Vinyl can have excellent and horrible titles. It's all in the recording and mastering. We have many who fly by and list Mp3 as their source, so it was a good guess.

Some of these guys have churned through some very high dollar gear and know far more than I may ever. Some have intense knowledge of of music and gear combos that work well together and those that do not play well at all together.

Lets back it down a bit all of us.
