Dualdisc-Kind of blue?

I was at Costco yesterday and they are selling several 'dualdiscs' for $12.99. I haven't read any reviews of these but
they sound interesting. I'm especially interested in the dualdisc
version of Miles Davis Kind of Blue. If anyone has it, how is
the 5:1 mix? Do they isolate Miles in one channel, Coltrane
in another channel etc? I'd appreciate any opinions on the surround mixes of the various dualdisc dvd's.
Thanks, Mike

I assume you're talking about the DVD-A release?

I don't know about that formatted version, but...

I have the SACD version of that Miles album and it's great. Personally I don't listen to music in multi-channel muich, but I can tell you that the musicians are not separated on the different channels like you mentioned. I can't really describe how bad that would sound, but it would be really awful, trust me.

I can hear it now, Miles coming from the center, JC from the left, piano from the right, drums from the rear right WHAT??, bass from the rear left WHAT??

Having said that, the surround mix is fine and sounds good, whether you like it or not is a different question though...

Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" is on Sony Music, and Sony Music will not issue anything on DVD-A.

For info on DualDisc, you can do a search here. You will see that it may be a "stillborn" format.

Here's a link to amazon which is also selling this dualdisc:

Interesting that one of the reviewers says he likes this mix better than the SACD.

I too have the SACD and love it. One of the reasons I love it so much is that the 5.1 mix doesn't sound like a surround mix, but rather a wider and deeper stereo mix...which is how I prefer to listen to most music, especially jazz. The DualDisc seems like it has some nice features, which mught be worth the price alone.

But plain and simple, the album sounds best on Vinyl through a great system. What's funny is that starting years back with the specal gold edition CD, they finally recorded the release at the right speed. It was always a bit sped up by almost a half note (I used to notice this inmy college days while playing in a jazz course).

If you like the KOB SACD, you'll love Coltrane's Blue Train SACD. Stereo only, but clean and rich. An essential recording.

DualDisc is a bit easier to say than SACD or DVD-A. Point: DualDisc.

I'll probably give the Stray Cats disc a spin. They don't say on the site whether the 'DVD' side is LPCM or 96/24 or what have you...I assume it's the same as playing a DVD video, in that it plays through the digital out.
