Ok who has had their ears on both? Is one better than the other?

I have Making Movies, and Communique on MOFI SACD, and I think they sound exceptional. Was just wondering if the SHM is any better..

I have owned both versions of Brothers In Arms. I thought the SHM sounded (a little) better, especially in the clarity department. I was disappointed that the ending (instrumental outro) portion of Why Worry was edited out of the album. Perhaps they used the European master (or different master) of the album? I ended up selling the SHM, and keeping the MoFi version for that reason.

If the SHM had the full version of Why Worry, I would have kept it, instead.

Edit: Just looked it up; the SHM was mastered using the UK master tapes, which has the edited version of Why Worry.

"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Where did you find the SHM version ? I have the MOFI but it wouldn't hurt to get the SHM version. I have several SHM-SACD and I have not been dissappointed.

Update, I found several on the auction site. A month or so ago there was only $100 and over copies. Very very few titles I'll pay $100 or more.

Check this site, you can find it for much less:

I have bought a number of discs from discogs, and I have found the ratings of the discs to be accurate.

Looks like the Dire Straits SHM-SACDs, with the exception of Brothers in Arms, are no longer available through CD Japan which is where I got mine for under $20 a piece. Not surprising they're unavailable in some places since most of them were released almost a decade ago. Acoustic Sounds has them for $60. I haven't bothered to get any of the MoFi releases since I have the SHM-SACD versions. The MoFi are now the less expensive option. I've probably bought each of the Dire Straits albums more than half a dozen times in different formats over the years.

Brothers in Arms had 2 Masters, not a UK master but CD and Vinyl masters. The Album was edited to fit on Vinyl to keep it on 1 LP record but still recorded mixed and mastered digitally and the first album truly designed for CD and the extended play of CD's.

The Original Digital Master for the CD in the UK is not only full length but practically a 1 to 1 copy of the Digital Master. the Mofi version is pretty much Identical to the original CD measured a tiny amount less DR but it sounds identical. No Better or worse but if you are in the UK it would be cheaper Just to get a used copy of the Original Vertigo CD , I can't tell the difference between the Original and Mofi SACD.

The other Dire Straits original CD's are all pretty good , The Mofi's all similar to the original Vertigo UK CD's sometimes a touch more dynamic others a tiny bit less on a track by track basis ( also prone to disc rot ) but mofi's are all the definitive and the Full length album versions. The 1996 vertigo re-issues are also decent but less dynamic but still sound great, the original CD of Dire Straits has an edited Sultans of swing which was fixed in 1996. I haven't heard the SHM CD's, but it's safe to say, All the newer Re-Issues away from SHM and Mofi will be compressed crap.
