SDA SRS 1.2tl renovations

w4tzegjdcy9u.jpg

Big boys are all naked minus the tweeters. All parts are in hand for the upgrades, minus the crossovers that Dave at DHS is working his magic on.

-Threaded inserts
-Armacell to ensure speakers are sealed well
-Noico tape for baskets
-Silicone sealant for the cabinet
-Power grab for loose braces and speaker magnets
-Sound absorber for rear walls
-Stain and poly for walnut pieces. (considered recovering but the veneer is in very good shape)

I bought my first pair of 1.2tl's back in 1991 and kept them for about 12 years prior to selling. My brother had a pair of Klipsch K-horns and talked me in to those. Great speakers but I missed my Polks almost from day one. Well, about 7 years ago, I found these guys for an absolute steal and brought them home. I almost immediately changed out the tweeters to the 198's, upgraded the speaker/sda connecter plates, made a really nice SDA cable and pretty much haven't touched them since then. I finally have some time on my hands, so here we go. Super excited to see what these things will do when done. Thanks to all the Polksters out there that have shared their journey with upgrades. It's been a huge help in my quest to get everything I can out of these guys.

On a side note, the hardest part in taking these things apart was getting the side wood strips off without destroying the fabric. They were nailed and glued in place, so that made them alotta fun to separate.

Never use silicone anything inside a speaker.

If your original gaskets are not damaged there's absolutely no reason to replace them. The gaskets are supposed to be paper thin.

Noico tape is completely wrong. You want Dynamat Xtreme.

I went with 80 mil. After comparing it and others to Dynamat, I decided to try this one. I have several friends in the area that have been using for quite some time and speak very highly of the results at a fraction of the cost.

Satan, no >:) but while the K-horns sounded pretty good, it wasn't even close to the 1.2's. And yes; definitely glad to be back on track.

So, Noico dampening sheets not tape because this is the tape. https://noico.info/products/noico-tape-finishing-sealing-tape/

Definitely not the tape. These are the sheets that come in varying thicknesses. Looking back at my original post, I see that I listed tape.

I used Dynamat Xtreme in my 1.2tl's, 4 other SDA's and the inner cabin of my SUV. Last year, I used the Noico 80 mil on 3.1tl's.

I agree with your friends and found it comparable in installation and affect. As Jesse (F1nut) states, do not use silicon because of off gasing and causticity to the drivers and XO's. Power Grab is the preferred product to seal the cabinets.

Your upgrades will make what you loved about your first set even better this time around. Congrats and good luck moving forward.

The wood veneer is walnut not mahogany.

Thank you. They were in pretty bad shape and initially I thought I would have to put new veneer on them but once I got them apart and began sanding, they cleaned up nicely. Fresh stain and then a few coats of poly and there you have it.
