Apparently, he's had lung cancer twice and a partial lobectomy, so not in the best health to start with.

    From Wiki

In early 1998, Prine was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer on the right side of his neck. He had major surgery to remove a substantial amount of diseased tissue, followed by six weeks of radiation therapy.[12] The surgery removed a piece of his neck and severed a few nerves in his tongue, while the radiation damaged some salivary glands. A year of recuperation and speech therapy was necessary before he could perform again.[13] The operation altered his vocals, and has added a gravelly tone to his voice.[14]

In 2013, Prine learned he had cancer in his left lung and underwent surgery to remove it. After the surgery, a physical therapist put him through an unusual workout to build stamina: Prine was required to run up and down his house stairs, grab his guitar while still out of breath and sing two songs. Six months later, he was touring again.[13]

On March 29, 2020, Prine's family announced that had been hospitalized on March 26 after suddenly experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19. He was intubated on the evening of March 28, and remains in critical condition.[15]

My mother had that same cancer in her neck three times in her life. It is sinister and I was fortunate to have her as long as I did.

I have always been impressed by the toughness of our parents and grandparents generations. They’ve been through a lot and persevered. Sadly, this illness seem to target them especially. Here’s to hoping he finds the strength to fight this and has the medical care to come out of this.

One of the songs I listened to on cassette in the 70's.

(I didn't understand all of the lyrics back then; now I do)

Thanks for the update. My GF’s father was a John Prine’s gymnastics coach in high school. He said John wrote fragments of song lyrics on chalkboards all the time.

Played John's music all afternoon yesterday. It's been a bit since I spun his tunes. Amazing lyrics and so down to earth. Hang in there Mr. Prine.

    From Fiona Prine on Facebook

This is John’s 8th day in ICU . He is receiving excellent medical care and being treated with kindness and compassion by the entire team looking after him day and night.
I cannot be with him which makes this nightmare all the more distressing for me.
As you know, John was put on a ventilator last Saturday. He still needs quite a bit of help with his breathing. Like many patients currently in ICU beds all around the world, John has pneumonia in both lungs. He has also developed some peripheral issues that are being treated with meds, including antibiotics.
He is very ill and yet I remain hopeful that he can continue to fight this devastating virus and come home where we can care for him.
I don’t have the words to adequately Thank You all for the outpouring of love and prayers that John and our family has received this last week. It means the world to us to have your love and support at this difficult time.
On behalf of me and our boys- Jody Jack and Tommy - please know that we are keeping you all in our hearts with a prayer that you stay safe and healthy. Please continue to send Love, Prayers and Positive Energy to John. He needs us now more than ever.
John loves you and I love you too.🙏🏼❤️💚
