Every year 2000 people in New York City die from the common flu......yet no cries from the media, no cries from the local or national politicians, no cries from Weirdwood, no social distancing and no lock down.

Not entirely accurate as they lump pneumonia in with that statistic. “Every year, about 2,000 New Yorkers die of seasonal flu and pneumonia, which CAN develop as a complication of the flu.”

It remains to be seen how widespread covid-19 will be; if predictions are accurate, we could have exponentially more people infected with coronavirus than those who contract seasonal flu.

F1Nut - It will be interesting to see what the data will reveal, as the testing gets more and more extensive, as far as how many negatives they get. The latest I heard in the Friday press conference was that 92% are coming back negative, ie. they have some other infection, probably viral. Most of them are probably the flu. Of course that doesn't factor in the fact that COVID-19 is more often fatal, at least in the people whose symptoms are severe enough to warrant testing. FWIW.

43% of Americans do not get vaccinated for the seasonal flu, for whatever reason or by choice.

With this new virus you have no choice, no vaccine.

I bet you don't get flu shots? I would hope you do though.

Why do we allow masks to have elastic that expires? We don't have enough masks because of the expiration of the elastic ties.

Simple cloth ties would allow a mask to never go out of date and be stored by the zillions in warehouses for just this usage.

    • What are we doing as Americans to help each other?

Many Americans across the country are turning to patriotism to find hope during the coronavirus outbreak.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) called on his constituents to rally around Old Glory during a Friday press conference.

“We’ve been attacked by this virus. We have to pull together,” DeWine said, according to WOWK. “Fly that flag every single day.”

DeWine told the media about the act of one 7-year-old girl.

The governor said he received an email from the girl’s mother which said, “Mr. DeWine, we do not have an American flag to hang outside our home. Today after your news conference, my 7-year-old daughter made this flag for our house in honor of your request.”

“I would like to thank 7-year-old Elaina in Radnor, Ohio for the beautiful flag,” DeWine said.

Cleveland.com reported there have been “lots of flags” put up around northeast Ohio in response to DeWine’s call.

    Others have done similar acts.

Great idea verb (as well as mike Devine and Elaina!!). I am going to get mine out again this evening. I even have a spotlight from some Halloween decorations that we had to keep it lit all night! Thanks for the story!

If we are going to talk amount infected/cases.....the flu has roughly 50 million.....in a 7 month period with over 700k seeking hospital care. CV is not even close , by a long shot. Those are CDC numbers. You can look at the curve of influenza and corona , both real similar.

Point is, we go through the influenza virus every year and lose roughly 10-50 thousand people without nobody giving a rat's behind. Now, if a state loses 10 to the CV, they are closing the whole state
Does that mean they all weren't doing their jobs when we were losing 100 people a day to influenza? That's a virus too ya know, one we are intimately acquainted with. Even so, with our years of experience, years even decades of vaccines , research....we still can't avoid all those deaths every year. So we've become so comfortable with it, it's not even news anymore. As a society, we are pretty ok with death....unless we can make political hay over it. Then those deaths become important. If not, nobody cares. We lose 2300 a year to medical malpractice. Anyone call for investigations, try to see why and offer suggestions to get those numbers down ? Nah....so what, crap happens right.

My rant isn't about not caring about CV, more so about the selective caring about only those issues that can be turned into votes. At the cost of people's jobs, the economy, trillions in added debt ? Really ?

It's not about what we are losing or have lost so far, it's about what the projections are for the losses to become. Even if the 480,000 deaths in the US is an over-estimate by a factor of 5x, we're still talking about 100,000 deaths. The flu is a known quantity and this is an unknown one that is additive and has not been factored in, and more importantly, one that our hospitals do not have the capacity to take care of. I'm not saying it isn't being politicized and I'm not saying that certain factions aren't taking political advantage of that, however this is also an issue of fear of the unknown.

That's the whole point We know the flu well, and tens of thousands die from it year after year, and nobody is closing down anything, no media frenzy etc. Matter of fact, you never hear about anything, as if those lives are meaningless.

So my question remains, we gonna do this again next year ? We will be acquainted with it by then. Will deaths from the CV matter next year ? We will most likely have a vaccine by then so we'll just tell people to make sure they get their shot and be done with all this ? No more reporting deaths and such .

Fear of the unknown works for everything if you let it. Fear that an earthquake will finish off California. Fear that a meteor will strike and wipe out the majority of the planet. Fear of another deadly virus like the Black Plague. Fear of a nuclear war. Fear of dieing in a car accident, plane crash, train derailment.

Take your pick, you can let fear run your life or use common sense and distinguish between real threats and hyped up ones. More have died here from texting while driving I bet than the CV. Nobody called to have cell phones abolished.

Granted, the sheltering in place has had an effect on controlling the spread as well as our early travel bans. We don't shelter in place for the flu every year, maybe thats why those numbers are greater, and we don't issue travel bans every year. So maybe Corona would be just as deadly as the flu if we took no precautions, agreed. Still doesn't answer my questions, what nobody gave a hoot about the 20k flu deaths ? We going to do this all again come fall ? Hello a decade of depression if we do.

BTW, hugely disappointed in the Gov. of Florida for not closing those beaches earlier. It would have kept those little brat spring breakers from even traveling there. Now they went home all over the country with many carrying the virus....yeah, but you made your bucks off the breakers right so that made it ok.

....and a quick google search says I'm right.

26 percent of all motor vehicle crashes are related to the use of cell phones. Each day, 11 teens die in crashes caused by texting and driving. 2.35 million people in the US are injured or disabled by car crashes every year. More than 330,000 of these crashes that cause severe injury are caused by texting and driving.Feb 19, 2019

Do the math, that's 4015 kids a year die from texting and driving....and we seem ok with that. Nobody is crying to disable cell phones while driving. Those 4k teens, expendable. 30-40-50k flu deaths, expendable. Medical malpractice deaths, and a whole cast of thousands more from various things, expendable. 500 CV deaths, oh heck no, close it all down. Does anyone see my point here ? The flu is not putting us over the limitations of our hospitals, COVID-19 is. Those other things you mention are not the same as COVID-19. A similar example would be if an asteroid were on a course with a 90% probablilty of grazing our upper atmosphere or something like that. It's the fact that the so called experts have made the prediction of 480,000 deaths (way way more than the annual toll for the flu) that is the problem here. I'd like to see them revisit that and reassess that on a monthly basis. For all we know we may have already changed the picture. God forbid those experts had political motivations and were not being truthful.

It made me want to puke that the governor of FL was so stupid and spineless.

Read it again Ron, 330 k severe injuries, which means hospital beds. It isn't Corona alone crashing the hospital systems, it's on top of what they already have on their plate between flu, other chronic diseases, heart disease, etc. Beds always run short or close to it this time of year so anything that comes down the pile is going to challenge that systems capabilities.

Crashing the global economy is being done by choice and ignorance, sprinkle in a little unpreparedness too. Economies would not have crashed if China was open and honest about it from the start. If the WHO didn't ignore early warnings . The spread could have been contained much earlier.

For me, what's interesting, after some introspection, is that I never cared about the flu season before. Ignorant? Naive? Maybe. But the flu was something that happened, and you got through it.

Never got a flu shot. Except when we had mandatory flu shots while in the Military.

So going forward, will I change my behavior? Well, I'm not getting any younger. I'm in good health. But until next season, I have some time to think about it.

No point in trying to convince anyone. There have been hundreds of posts and there will be no convincing Tony and Jesse and some others about covid.

Just keep chugging along, better use of energy elsewhere.

And I hope Jesse and Tony are right in the end and this was all bloated.

Never had a flu shot myself either, don't plan on it either too in the future. Corona or no corona. That's with 26 million Americans getting the flu. Can't even remember last time I had a flu.

Nobody needs to be convinced. We all accept that this thing is no joke. What we are saying is the over-hyped panic is ridiculous. The politicization of this is downright criminal, and given the track record displayed by our media and elected officials over the past 4 years breeds skepticism.

We are all in this together, and if we simply look out for one another, this too shall pass.

Joey, the virus is real, the response bloated, our preparedness unforgivable. Our Governors lack of taking action sooner, stupid. Our youth, selfish brats. Some adults who still go to parties and bars, clubs.....morons. Our CDC, a joke.
    that about sums it up.

I for one, would like a detailed explanation of how they are using the billions we just gave them.
