The W.H.O. did make test kits but they typically provide or maybe sell them to countries that don't have their own virology laboratory capability. The US could have followed the recipe without having to purchase anything, which was the German method, and was available Jan 17th. Instead the CDC chose their own method but they had manufacturing errors and the test kits that worked in their lab did not work in other labs due to problems with one of the reagents being defective.

It seems like Biden did more than stretch the truth here. Good to know.

So I got the Brietbart source part wrong, I did agree there was probably no contact between the WHO and the CDC.

I just found this but haven't read it yet:

    https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/sites/default/files/microsites/ostp/pcast-h1n1-report-final2.pdf

OK the short story is they predicted between 30,000 and 90,000 deaths in the US vs the 12,469 that we actually got.

Edit - I'd also like to make the point that I don't remember any curfews, business, school closures, social distancing etc.. taking place in 2009 and look at how much they over-estimated the death toll then.

I'm trying to be positive here o:)

OK maybe the vaccine coming out in Oct back then may have saved some lives but also maybe they attempted to factor that in and still overshot on their estimates vs reality by 2.4x to 7.2x, so maybe it's still reasonable to assume a similar error factor this time.

If the extreme measures being taken in school closings, mall closings, shelter in place orders, curfews, non-essential business closings etc. were not factored in correctly or not expected this time either then maybe we can assume an even greater error factor this time.

If somehow a vaccine is brought into play sooner than the 12 to 18 mos. expected that will increase the error factor multiplier even more, since that was not factored in.

So how inflated might the 480,000 death prediction this time around be? Interested in any comments. Give the 2009 report a read.

The death rate is so different with COVID.

0.01-0.03% for H1N1 2009, versus anything up to 8% this time.

The numbers in China may be the clearest guide, except that not many are sure that those numbers can be trusted, in which case it’s likely to be worse, not better. No other country has a higher than 10% recovery rate, so those death numbers may be too high, or too low. It’s impossible to say at the moment.

So the current numbers could completely underestimate the gravity, or overestimate the gravity, depending on your perspective... and testing numbers.

RIght primary, that is a gimme in a presidential election year. Courts overruled so the governor just shut down the polls under emergency powers. Primaries were still held in other states, although turnout was said to be light.

I think our governor has done a good job but I disagreed with this.

Over a million deaths per year from mosquito bites is a ruthless, devastating killer, yet not considered a world wide pandemic. The Wuhan virus pales in comparison.

That’s a straw man argument, Mr. Nut.

In fact, in the U.S. fewer than 15,000 mosquito borne illnesses are reported in a normal year. Fewer than 5,000 deaths occur. So yeah... far from a worldwide pandemic.

Day 2 of self quarantine. The Mrs and I are feeling great! And our son, who was supposed to start his new job in DC got delayed a week, and will now start working remotely, as his office is having everyone work from home!

We were supposed to take him to the airport today. But we're happy he will be with us just a little bit longer!
