Sleep Apnea - anyone else?

Options
Had a doctor visit yesterday and with good news. First, some history. Back around September I was talking with a coworker and mentioned how I was tired due to another bout of insomnia, which of course were becoming more and more frequent over the years. He asks..."Have you thought about seeing a sleep specialist to check for Sleep Apnea?" Of course it's something that never entered my mind so it was a "No." He pretty much rode my butt every day until I made an appointment. Fast forward, got to my appointment in late October and discussed with the doctor. He sets me up with a home study to check for sleep apnea. An "Apnea" is when your airway closes off while you sleep, essentially cutting off your oxygen for periods of time and it varies. As your body struggles for oxygen, your body "jolts" and you regain breathing. This goes on all night long. This is measured as Apnea's Per Hour (APH). Normal is up to 10 APH. Mild is up to 20 APH, moderate is up to 30 APH and over 30 is severe. Mine came in at a mind-blowing 76 (Yes, 76). It was occurring in me more than once per MINUTE. This was causing, among other issues, for me to have high blood pressure. At one point, my BP was 180/110 (scary). Also, your body's oxygen level should be over 90% to be healthy and 80% is bad...mine at some points was 75%. There were even times I was not breathing for up to a full minute. The sleep center fast tracked me for a study. Fast forward, December 11th, I get a CPAP, which is a nasal mask that provides pressurized air that keeps the airway open all night. Since the night of December 11th, I have been getting wonderful glorious beautiful sleep EVERY night and it continues. Not a hint of insomnia. Yesterday the doctor went over my results on the first follow up. My APH went from 76...to an avg of 2.5 (yes, 2 1/2) and my blood pressure is down to 140 / 90 and dropping. My energy levels are way up, my focus is back, I do not get tired at work any longer and so on. With that, if anyone out there even remotely thinks they may have this or they've been suffering from terrible sleep for a long time...go get checked. Even if it rules out sleep apnea, at least you'll know. The list of damage that Sleep Apnea causes to the body grows every year as they study it further. Heart Disease is the big one, but like me, it caused my blood pressure to soar.
No excuses!

I have a mild case of it, have also used a CPAC for years. Also agree with everything you said about getting checked.

I have used a CPAP w/humidifier, a Fisher & Paykel unit, for maybe 12-15 years. I can't remember the actual year I started. My CPAP pressure is set at eight psi, fairly low from what others have said theirs is. You'll get used to it fairly quick, but it's still cumbersome. It's great that you're feeling better!

Yup! One of my issues was recurring insomnia. Would get bouts of it at least once or twice a month for 3-4 days at a time. Since being on the CPAP for 1 1/2 months...nothing. Not even a hint of it.

I have the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet. It's set to a min pressure of 9 with a max of 15. It'll auto adjust if it senses I need it. The doctor said it adjusted from 9 to 10 at times, but mostly stayed at 9.

I adjusted to it very quickly and love the amazing sleep I get every night. It's a blessing!

Is cleaning everyday an absolute necessity? What about every other day? Are the machine cleaners being sold on-line clinically effective? Thanks

I dont have it but my brother, nephew, and best friend have it, and without a big old Honda generator running 3 CPAPs at the hunting shack there would be no peace in the woods at night. One of the great modern inventions of our time for sure.

My 91 year old mother uses a ResMed 10. Her pressure was supposed to be set at 12. I don't know how to adjust it. I did not know the newer ones sensed needs and have the capability to change pressures. Hers blows air like crazy.

I built a shed & used 2 inch insulation & made it so door stays cracked/hinged 6 inches or so when it is running & facing away from camp. Well worth the coin. Works great on movie nights watched outdoors too. Lock it up when not there. Made a Very Big difference. I store oils & gasoline on bottom & gererator is on shelf & cord is in better spot to pull

That's why I hoped my test came back positive, at least there would be a remedy.

Yeah, started using mine a couple of weeks ago as the sleep study showed me to have a mild to mid case of it. My headache doc at UW is hoping it will also help with my 24/7 headache...so far its zilch on helping the headache but my episodes per hour have dropped from 10/12 to around 2.2 so that's great. Been tough trying to figure out to keep it safe from our 3 nibbling felines but so far its ok. Also trying to figure out the cleaning thing....manufacturer says clean clean and clean, and the CPAP forums say eh, its our own germs so why worry. Hoping to strike a nice middle ground.

Initial sleep study was 45 episodes per hour. Been on CPAP since 2008.
My brother was diagnosed about 25 years ago and our biological mother has sleep apnea as well.

My first CPAP finally crapped the bed about mid November and I upgraded to a shiny new one recently and moved from a “normal” nasal mask to a new under the nose style. Crappy part is the “small” size was too big for my nose and now I have a “Her Size” small one. 🤷‍♂️

Or stop reading the "Why expensive cables matter" threads all the time. I used to have nightmares where F1Nut would tie me up with lamp cord and force me to hear a difference in cables. When I said I didn't, i'd have to stay there listening to 24 straight hours of Celine Dion. Now THAT is a nightmare!

    No excuses!
