Funny. I saw the title and didn't even have to look to see the author was... :D

I make pure ethanol alcohol with my high efficiency reflux still at 196 proof. To get any higher requires using a drying agent. Now it's possible in the high altitudes of an arid Mexico you could get 200 proof. DO NOT try drinking it at that proof as it kills any cells it comes in contact with eg: lips, tongue, throat. You can cut it with some pure water 50/50 and make really good 100 proof Vodka.

I had a Polish girlfriend and she once gave me a shot of Polish Spirytus (their grain alcohol equivalent). I downed it and everything started burning. When I could speak again I read the label I told her "You cant drink that straight". She said sure they do, when her dad and brothers come over they drink a bottle. I asked her what happened and she said two of them passed out but only one of them got sick. Fun.

Another night I was in her bedroom and noticed she had a bottle of it on her nightstand. I asked if she drank it in bed. She laughed and told me it was for when she got leg cramps during the night. She would rub the Spirytus on it and it would go away!

About 20 yrs. ago Everclear was listed as 200 proof 100% alcohol, it is now listed at 150. Well the younger stupid me decided to do shots of it... When I got my breath back I got after it again thinking the second couldn't be nearly as bad as the first...when I got my breath ....aaagain .... I like to suffocated!! Damn that stuff will suck the air right out of your soul ....

I used watermelons for that stuff from then on out.

Not too far from where I live Archer-Daniels makes pure ethanol for blending with gas. They had to add a bitterant to the delivery truck as some of the drivers had a side business if you know what I mean 😉

Once upon a time a friend and I had a bottle of stuff called Double Tvarski (sp?) vodka. I remember taking a micro-sip to try it, but we just mixed it with OJ in small amounts to avoid killing our digestive tracts forever.

Also tried Bacardi 151 once just to say I did.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

You can still find Everclear at 195 proof. Its just that some states don't let them sell it. That's when you get the watered down 151 proof stuff.

You must be from Minnesota. But you dont have to buy 3.2 there is always Strong available just make sure you stock up on Saturday cause I think the Liqour stores are closed on Sunday. I remember going to the 3.2 bars in Northern Minnesota where they sold pop or whatever for set ups because you were allowed to bring a bottle and buy your mixes there.

Grew up in Minnesota and Iowa. The only place you could buy strong beer was in the liquor store and the nearest one from our podunk town was 25 miles away. That's how I learned how to make real beer, wine and shine.

A Friday night, early in May, 1991.
Last day of sophomore year Spring finals.
195 proof was still legal to buy in PA.
    Some beers and then grain-n-OJ.

Worst I ever remember... The hangover too. My father made sure to hit EVERY bump on the 2.5 hour ride home when my parents picked me up that Saturday morning.

    Ah, the memories.

Wow this bottle is the 95% 190 proof. I must have bought it in college and forgotten about it for 30 years as its still sealed. IF I had just spent some time studying back then.

we mixed it with anything grape and called it purple passion. they actually sold premixed 2 liter bottles under that name at the time.

We had a blend of PGA, vodka, melon liquer, peach schnapps, orange juice, and lemonade dubbed the "one night stand" Way different times back then.

I would go into azeotrope and fractional distillation to explain the 95% max but this does not seem like a phil nye the science guy educational thread.

My most memorable experience with Everclear was during a frat party at college. Mixed with Hawaiian punch, it was actually pretty good and easy to drink. As a pledge, not knowing any better, well the outcome was inevitable.

The next morning because some idiot pulled the fire alarm, I woke up on the pool table, with my head nearly over the edge, with a trashcan to help facilitate my well, you know, expressions during the evening. Don't remember any of that during the night.

That morning was horrible. Fire alarm splitting my head, and then having to go back later and clean up my mess as I was only partially successful in hitting the trash can. Ahh memories!
