T.W.A.T. 2019

Last week of September, my buddy Brad and I decided to do the Trans-Wisconsin Adventure Trail and then over to Lake Itasca/Mississippi Headwaters in Minnesota and finally following the Mississippi back down most of the way to Iowa before heading home.

Here is a post with lots of pictures and some words:
Hawkeyes Go East

But this one picture sums up the entire trip perfectly:

How did you like the headwaters? We got cabins 7 miles south of the headwaters north of Park Rapids, and my deer stand sits real close to Itasca State Park real pretty there this time of year. I bet the fall foliage was in peak pretty country, I will be up there in a few weeks.

What a great trip that looked like, and I enjoyed the ride thread on ADV. Awesome photos and sights. What a way to take some time away.

    That was really kool!
    Thanks for sharing.
I just bought a 2012 Goldwing after not riding for 15 years. My last bike was a 2000 Goldwing.
So I am trying get back up to speed after the long hiatus and a 920 pound bike. My last GW was even heavier but fifteen years older now. Father Time has caught up to me some.
    Peace. D

Do it. Buy a pimple bone dome, a pair of goggles and catch flies in your teeth.

Nice pic. I’m in central Wisconsin and it’s nice this time of the year but wet this particular year. We’re over 15 inches above average for the year.

It was the wet part that piqued my interest.

That really looks like an awesome trip!
I’d love to find something like that could be done on a street bike. Or maybe I should just sell one of my street bikes and get an enduro. Had one once. I think it was an 87 Honda CR 460 ??? IIRC (and I’m sure I do not)

Why not look at an adventure bike, Glenn? Capable and comfy for road tripping, around town, and hooliganism, and not unmanageable on fire roads, though best if you got long legs. Even just one would help.

There were sections of this trip that a bigger adventure bike would have struggled with. But those sections had alternate routes to bypass them for bigger bikes and overlanding type vehicles.

The KTM 640 Adventure I bought from a friend is a very nice balance but is definitely a bit chonky and with a bit too much front end weight bias with the 7+ gallon gas tank so far forward and up high. It struggled with sandy stuff and a not so great front tire (for dirt as it was excellent on pavement) made it a bit of a workout to keep upright when things got loose.

Definitely agree for anything more off-roady than gravel or hardpack fire roads getting to a camp site, or mild loops between stretches of road, especially if loaded up with gear and fuel. Even slick conditions mild off road easily make the case for a smaller bike. I think hybrid is what the 650-800 class tries to address.

I found it to be a trade-off whenever trying to use one bike for more than one style of riding, which is, as most bike owners come to know, how one ends up with multiple bikes. Unless you're Steve McQueen jumping the fence in The Great Escape. He only needed one bike.

Side note: audio's still been more expensive than riding.
