Quality time with Kiddos

Options
So we just got back from a long day out and about. I just sat down and put REM on the Rega, got a cold drink and was about to read my latest copy of Hi-fi Choice with a story on the Vega G1!!!

Then my daughter comes in with a 750pc puzzle that she desperately wants to complete. Drop it all and here we go :#

Have to share the time as much as I can. I am very lucky to have my children and need to always remember that.

What do you guys do with the kids that’s like this. Simple and off the cuff, they will remember long after we are gone.

That's simple, you turn off the TV and help her put together her puzzle. That way when you are gone, she will ALWAYS remember that her Dad was always willing to do things with her, which meant he loved her more than reading a magazine or whatever. He was always willing to put her first. That's priceless and what being a parent is all about.

Awesome post, Joe. I got a little choked up recalling some of the "insignificant" things I used to do with my girls when they were small, like a century ago! Playing board or video games, going in the pool even when I was tired and really needed to get some rest before work, man the list goes on and on. But yeah, I hope they recall some of those things now that they're older (21 &19), and remember just a few of the good times.
    I know I sure won't forget them.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

    Doug the Pug; that's cool.

    :)

(yeah, I didn't do the best job of sitting stuff aside to spend good time doin' stuff with our kids -- we have good relationships with both of 'em, but they certainly could've been better)

God gives me a brand new day every day to start fresh Doc! I don’t deserve it and I sure don’t always remember it, but every day I wake, I get to start over. So grateful.

Ok. Found myself alone in green pastures with this one. Kid ran off lol.
Got the perimeter and maybe a couple pieces more than that.
Taped it to a piece of cardboard so we can save and not have to take up a table with it.

My younger daughter loves puzzles as well.

So we have done many, many puzzles...

But bike rides are where both of my daughters and I really have a blast. My older daughter and I were supposed to make a mini road trip to pick up her new bike on the 4th and ride some of the trails in that area (Woodstock, NY).

But, the day before she fell at Summer Camp and landed on her arm. She has a “Bone Buckle”...

Not a true break, I guess the bone actually bends!

So she is in a cast for the next week till we go back to our Ortho Dr for another X-Ray to make sure it went back in place.

I had to go pick it up by myself and now it’s sitting in the garage causing both of us depression... haha

My daughter used to alphabetize my music collection after I'd get around 20 or 30 new albums or CD's, she would go to town albums weren't as hard as CD's albums you would flip and file, where CD's you had to pull out and rearrange making more room.

That job then was taken over by my grandson he not only kept up with albums and CD's but all digital files and metadata he actually enjoys it and listens to a lot of my stuff and goes to concerts with me and the wife on occasion.

But quality time also meant going to the lake Cabin, swimming, fishing, boogie boarding, ATV's Mountain Biking, hunting, plus winter activities so the kids had good times, but we all enjoyed doing activities together. My fondest times are sharing music and my audio hobbies with my grandson, it's time he comes over soon there is a stack of CD's and concert Blu Ray's that need tending to, should be the last time anything else will be streamed, he uses our Spotify and Tidal account as we are on the family plans we all enjoy streaming now. They grow up fast so enjoy as much time as you can with your children.

Fantastic! Way to be a real dad! We have a no phone/ tablet policy. When the kids enter a room we put them down. Now we are at the point we are barely on them. Today I'm off with my 6 year old daughter to go biking in the trails. Her first time. Time goes by way to fast. Soon my 6 year old will be wearing a university graduation gown and ill be retired. I don't want to miss out.

My kiddo and I do tons together. Whether it be science experiments, coop video games, fishing or just going to stores to look at books (she has been into the dogman series lately). Can't forget to read with her every night until she doesn't want to anymore.

Man I miss my little one, she has been with her mom in Oregon for summer break. She does get back soon though!

You know what did it for me, my brother had sent me a text. I checked my phone. My 8yr old son says "papa, was that important?" I said no. In my head I got to thinking nothing is more important than my kids. It really hit me hard. So thank you my son for bringing me back to reality and was is important to me.

I told my wife that when guests come over, they will be treated like smokers if they wish to check their phones. Go outside! I don't care that it is -30C. Are you here to visit or spend time on your phone with me sitting across from you. This came about after my 20 yr old nephew was on his phone constantly during our xmas dinner. After that I told my wife smokers go outside and so will people wanting to check their phones and I will no longer provide them with our guest network password.

Like Cody, we read to our kids every night. It is bonding time.

I can’t read. Now I feel like I’m missing out!

All jokes aside, I actually have my kids read to ME at night now. I told them I’ve already figured out this whole reading thing, this is their time to work on self improvement!

It takes longer, but it has helped them far exceed expected reading levels for their ages. I also think they get more from the story.

I am reading “The Hobbit” to my older daughter though. That’s a tough one to just plop down in front of an 8 year old I think. Besides, I LOVE that book!

But I fell like so many people don't see this. Let's put little Johnny in activities 5-6 days a week. let's Put Suzie in activities 5-6 days a week. Really? when do they have time to be kids and the adults to be parents. Sometimes I feel parents put their kids in activities as a way to show off, Well little Brian is in this and this and this and this as well as it takes the burden off of being a parent almost like a baby sitting service. Don't get me wrong, I think activities are very important. But being able to call on friends down the street, go biking, play, use the imagination, play some more and use the imagination some more much more enriching and rewarding for the child than being chauffeured 5-6 days a week and being dropped off and picked up.
