Original sda1 with vent holes vs original sda2?

Both types are fs..fairly nearby..I know that crossover rebuilding is priority..
What was the purpose of the vent holes ?
And what was the reason to drop one woofer in the sda2 ?

    Vents were for top mid-woofers only. They did away with those the very next speaker SDA1a and the interior of the cabinet changed as well.

    Cost-cutting for a "smaller" "cheaper" speaker line. The real question is why they kept the third one (which disappeared in the next revision.)
