hey all.. so we're going to do a bathroom in the basement of our home here real soon and just checking to see what brands come recommended from members here. The local plumber doing our job recommends one from Clarion and we have never even heard of them? The guy we are going with is a start to finnish person and it is his favorite but says we can go with any brand we like?? The one he recommends is a boxed in bath/shower with 6 jets and I saw a picture and it looked ok. Online I see no reviews so hoping some of you have one of these. Thanks either way any appreciate and advice. Oh, forgot to mention, it has to be one in sections as the doorway going down the stairs is only 30" wide...if that helps?? Didn't help me!! Thanks again.

I hate them. If you don't use them a lot, the water tubes behind the tube get filled with disgusting stuff. I've had them in two houses. Both had that problem. Maybe bad examples? I dunno, but when you are in the bath and it gets filled with nasty black sludge coming out of the jets, it will turn you off for a long time. I tried running bleach, etc., but the problem always seems to come back if you don't use them for awhile. Like I said, maybe bad examples, but I think unless they are designed to let every bit of water drain out (hard to do), then bacteria, mold, etc will grow in the water that's left.

Apparently, it is an issue with many : https://www.thriftyfun.com/tf/CleaningGroup/Bathroom/Cleaning-Bath-Tub-Jets.html

And hundreds of other google hits if you search for 'black mold from tub jets' or any thing similar to that.

    https://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Black-Flaking-in-a-Jetted-Bathtub

From the link above: #6:To maintain a clean jetted tub, you really need to clean it once a week, preferably after a bath to save on water.

No thanks, too much trouble. I prefer a non-jetted soaker tub.

Another consideration is size of water heater in the house and its recovery rate. A large tub and a slow to reheat electric water heater may mean the tub rarely gets used because of its impact on the rest of the household. Sometimes putting something new in leads to having to spend more money elsewhere in the house to make it work.

My former father-in-law was a builder. He hated tubs with jets for the reasons listed above. He never recommended them unless you were going to take a bath at least a few times a week and use the jets and give it a clean. If they sat, he said they always had problems. To me it's just not worth the headache of upkeep on them. We rarely take baths so we have a big soaker tub with no jets. It's just fine.

If you want the jets, I would recommend getting a hot tub for outside and get a regular tub for the bathroom.

All the stories are a gas. Really just looking to see what brands if any are recommended?

Ok. So far Jacuzzi brand. Thank you and yes agreed..why wouldn't we use it at least 3 times a week?? And who doesn't maintain a major purchase?? I know some people think dust all over their gear is acceptable...Not I. We run a clean ship here .

We have a corner tub with jets, we use it about once a week and maybe twice a year we turn on the jets. Had it 19 years with no issues. No black gunk.

I second this statement. We've had two of them and they shoot some nasty nuclear waste at you if not used several times a week. They also killed the hot water heater's tank. After my wife would fill up the tub for a soaking, read a book bath it would take a couple of hours before my son and I could take a shower. I won't want another one in my short future even though my wife passed away seven months ago and my son and I are shower only chumps.

The tub had nothing to do with your water heater issues. You just need a bigger one or go tankless.

Point was, it's a hot water heater killer. Tried tankless for an outdoor type hot tube but it wouldn't cut it. Had to add a second one in series to make it tolerable but I was never impressed.
