Since we couldn't scuttle it and it took 4 Japanese torpedoes to sink it later it makes one wonder why it was abandoned.

She lost power to all engines, with at least one armor penetrating bomb finding the engine room, and was a sitting duck. Enemy activity at the time made it far to risky and dangerous to recover it. The Japanese would have tracked her right to the rescue convoy and did even more damage to an already weakened Pacific Fleet.

That is so cool! I did not know, that the Dolittle raid during WW2 was launched off of her.

And the pics show her to be well preserved. Wow!

The Navy will send a few ships and a carrier to that position and perform a proper ceremony for the ship and her crew. The position will never be revealed to the general public. The only thing the Navy may try to recover from the ship would be her battle logs and the ship's bell.

Is recovering the ships bell a naval tradition or does it have another meaning?

I don’t even know they will try, but the ship’s bell would be returned to her home port and signify the end of her tour of duty. It also gives family members and shipmates a place to come to in order to pay their respects.

The logistics of such a recovery may make the effort impossible, but now that they know where the wreck is located, a memorial of some kind will take place, publicly or in private. The Hornet is simply too important a vessel in naval history to be allowed to go unrecognized.

    Thank you for sharing this.

The USS Hornet CV8 was the last fleet Aircraft Carrier we lost during the war. 1942 was not a good year for the Navy, Lost Lexington, Yorktown, Wasp and Hornet that year. All the cruisers at the bottom of iron bottom sound, not a good year.

If there was a way to save her they would have. With her sinking that left only the Enterprise and Saratoga in the Pacific, Enterprise was beat up is the same battle.
