Time for a change

Options
Well, I’ve been with the same company for 14+ years, and it’s been a great ride. I was approached by one of our competitors a couple weeks ago, and have just verbally accepted an offer that will effectively more than double my annual comp. The only catch is I’ll have an hour and some change commute each way....but the math is still very good even with gas costs.

I’m excited, but also nervous about leaving my current role. It’s surprising how comfortable you get in your work skin, and how hard it is to move away from it even when the numbers say it’s time to go.

If anyone has jumped ship after a long tenure, I’d love to hear your thoughts behind leaving (or choosing to stay.) Definitely a mix of excitement and bubble gut right now.

Congrats! Sounds like a great step. I landed on my current job 24 years ago, but changed jobs 3 times after college. Nowadays, there is no pension or the like to keep you with a company long term. Gotta look out for the family yourself!

I'm sure it'll work out for ya!

Thanks gents! It's a bit nerve wracking, the whole idea of unrooting and starting over. Companies want to put their best foot forward, just like we do, during interviews so who knows how green the grass really is over there. And great point VR, there's no way I'm burning bridges here. I love this town and the company has treated me well, I just can't pass up an opportunity with that much more $$ as well as benefits and title.

Gotta let the boss man know today, and my gut won't stop flipping. Almost feel like I'm about to tell the girl we're breaking up.....hah.

Use your new offer to see if your current company will bump up your salary? They
may just do that on their own once you advise them of your pending departure...
but at the same time, don't make that the focus if possible.

Good luck no matter what you do.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Thanks Polr. I think they'd move the needle some, but certainly not a more than double increase on salary, and definitely won't be seeing any options/equity bumps. My covered industry has been given minimal love the last few years, so there unfortunately isn't really any way for me to move into an equivalent role and stay focused on the industry I know and love.
