So this happened about two miles from my home today...

Options
A Navy SNJ-5 WWII training aircraft crash landed on the freeway. 20 minutes earlier, and I would have been right in the middle of the mess. I know the pilots that fly these aircraft, as they are part of a demonstration group out of Van Nuys. The plane that was lost flew over my house going slower than usual, and sounded like it was running rougher than usual, but I thought nothing of it until the smoke plume started to rise.

Glad the pilot got out safely.

When I was in the USAF, my last year was spent writing for a base newspaper. I had to go to the crash site of a T-38 trainer. The pilot tried to land it in a field that wasn't level, the plane bounced twice and hit a farmhouse. He, the trainee and someone in the farmhouse didn't fair so well.

It was an unpowered landing Jesse. He put it down right in the middle, but with a tail dragger, you need to set that as well. The plane bounced pretty hard, as the freeway is also in hilly terrain. He walked away, so I guess that counts as a good landing.

I figured, but still with all that road thought he'd be able to avoid the wall. But yeah, any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

"As to why it's bearing the markings of the N@zis' famed air force, the Condor Squadron reportedly performs mock dogfights at air shows. Lower-value vintage planes like the AT-6 are often dressed up to look like WWII-era fighters."

I will be driving through there tomorrow, and if safe to do so, I will try and take a picture of what in looked like for the pilot. It's hilly, and curves softly to the right. If he had a tricycle gear aircraft, he probably would have saved it, but no chance with a tail-dragger.

There's a joke waiting to happen about that Fokker being a Messerschmitt but I can't quite come up with it.
