My 1st credit card was from Sears. Back in those days credit cards didnt arrive
To kids still in school in the mail. A woking adult had to work their way up
From a store card to a mastercard.
Now you can get 20 cards in 20 minutes. Yes, other than home improvement
Stores, i seldom got to any store. But I also seldom buy crap online, either.
I have just about everything I need already. My xmas list is pretty short.
A pack of new socks and Im good for another year. I didnt even set up a tree the last
Couple of years. Every things paid for. So I guess Im just a lousey consumer.
    And Amazon can bite me.

I'm gonna miss Sears 'cause I won't be able to get expensive Agri-Fab yard/small farm equipment for cut rates just because it says "Craftsman" on the side anymore.

I also miss their paint. Sears' Easy Living was made my Sherwin Williams for Sears and to find an SW paint of the quality that was Easy Living, you have to go to an SW store. None of that BS in Lowe's or HD with the SW name on it is any better than that garbage BEHR that HD hocks.

The tools will be missed too but at least Lowe's is carrying it now.

Also, I was in a Sears last week. Picking up a part from the catalog desk for an appliance 'cause it was cheaper to ship to store and go get it than it was to ship to me. That appliance was a kerosene heater that my grandfather bought new in 1974. Sears still supports it.

That's what I will miss most about Sears. They are the last company that will stand behind what they sell and support it. For decades because they intended for stuff to last. If it breaks, they don't just replace it, they fix it. Unless they can't fix it then they replace it.

I'm going to miss that way of life. I hate having to throw something out because of something as stupid as a left-handed knibblin pin broke and a new left-handed knibblin pin is going to cost $753 but an entirely new appliance costs $600. Seems like an unsustainable way of life IMO. It's honestly un-American IMO too 'cause America was not built on unfettered conspicuous consumerism. It was built on people working and doing for themselves. Self-reliance. That's why the pickup truck is so popular here and our friends across the pond can't understand that way of life.

You know what else I miss? Radio Shack. And not the newer, trendier Radio Shack that was stocked with Taiwanese conglomerate garbage. The old Radio Shack where I used to get parts to fix the Taiwanese conglomerate garbage just so I could skew their materialistic consumerism business model.

Lastly, Sears died when they "merged" with Kmart. Kmart actually bought Sears Holdings Inc and jettisoned the Kmart name for the corporate parent and kept Sears 'cause, it's reputation is better than Kmart and Kmart is looked down upon as a "poverty brand" barely a step above a dollar store.

So all this failure is due to Kmart's mismanagement. And the shady real estate dealings that whatshisface has been doing with Sears properties.

What's even sadder is that I sound like I'm as old as Doc Hardy but I just turned 41 in July!

What is really ironic is that Sears was the catalog/mail-order king.

They were the Amazon of the pre-internet years.

But some old fuddy-duddy didn't see the writing on the wall or the potential behind that writing for the King of Catalog Shopping to leverage a catalog that could go anywhere with everyone all the time.

Now places like Amazon are eating Sears' lunch and the leadership of Sears blames everyone and everything else except the leadership of Sears.

Good point. Sears was the analog version of the digital Amazon we have now. But they didn't embrace the new technology and leverage the brand loyalty they had with so many people.
My uncle retired from their years ago and did very well for himself.

I was thinking the same thing!

They sold the worlds products through that catalogue but I assume mainly American made products.

I also wonder if Amazon will go down in a hundred years because of stupid management.

I miss Sears being around the corner already.

I too miss the old Radio Shack of the past. They sold Tandy products and Leather Stamping tools and leather projects to use them on. I got pretty good at stamping leather too.
I wanted to stamp saddles but girls became more important at that time in my life. I think I was 16 at the time. I stamped quite a few pocket books with shoulder straps and stitched them together too. Dyeing colors where needed was done too.
God, I love the smell of leather! Most people do too.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I really liked the craftsman products. Most of my hand tools are craftsman, in fact my very first mechanics tool set (still have it) is a craftsman. Stock picture, but mine was very similar, 2 socket sets, combination wrenches, some screwdrivers, and allen head tools. Ah, memories!

    uhrjbdq49q6n.png

I just followed after my Dad, who exclusively worked with craftsman products.

Until recently, most of my power tools were craftsman. IMO, the quality of the power tools is not as good as it once was, so I've been migrating over to DeWalt.

I'm hoping Ace hardware expands the craftsman stock in the store.
It's still a place that values service. We saw a porch swing on sale.
We bought it and asked for delivery. They got to the house 5 minutes after we
Got home and unloaded it to the back yard. Hard to beat that level of service.

And while we're at it, why is office depot/office max still in business?
I don't like them at all, but there isn't a staples in the whole metro area.
And the news stated somebody's trying to save toys r us.
Why? These are chains that fail on every level.
I am missing the old radio shack. Not the cell phone outfit that was
    pretending to be radio shack.

There is a RadioShack about 20 minutes from our house. I actually went in there the other day and bought a few resistors for my project.
If you have a HobbyTown store near you, they carry Radioshack components as well. :)

When I was a kid, the Sears store in downtown Joliet was huge. ~1963. Two story with basement (tools), huge parking lot. There was a glass booth on second floor where a guy with loudspeaker would direct you to an open parking space.
