@Dabutcher - We have a seven year old daughter and travel to Chicago semi-regularly with her. Here are a couple of ideas, if your idea of family fun isn’t walking through empty stadiums-

1/ The Bean is cool, if only for a few minutes, before you walk a block to...

2/ Crown Fountain. Lots of fun for kids to play in and fun for adults to watch. Bring bathing suits and towels for the kids.

There’s parking literally right below these two.

3/ Shedd Aquarium. Right up there with any I’ve been to around the world.

    4/ Chicago Children’s Museum

5/ Boat tour of the Chicago River... be sure to take the one associated with the Chicago Architectural Foundation. 90 minutes.

6/ Ferris Wheel on Navy Pier. Great views.

Maybe we should also cover things NOT to do in Chicago. Like...don't wear gang colors. Don't wander around at night alone....or in areas that are sparsely populated with other people. Don't flash your jewelry or cash.

….AND for heavens sake, don't let anyone hear you say NY's pizza is better, not without a 50 yd. head start anyway. :)

Looks like this was a bad week to be in Chicago. Well at least for 59 people. Is this the Midwest or the Middle East?

The majority of that took place in 7 hours too, between midnight Sat. and Sunday morning. That's about every weekend during warmer months, winter time it settles down a bit. I'll bet not that many died/got shot in Syria over the weekend.

Anyway....like I said, don't venture south of Soldiers field, at night alone in dark barely populated areas, or west of the city and you should be just fine. That also means....don't walk along the lake at night either, lots of scumbags hang out there at night.

No gang "colors" in the city anymore. Most of the gang hierarchy went to jails and the lunatics are running the asylums. Being "part of a gang" is now (usually) based on where you live (whether you want to be in one or not).

Agree on not flashing your cash or jewelry (thought that was common sense).

If you're out at night, you'll be fine in a group or area where there's a lot of people (touristy).

NY pizza $u(k$ so there's no worries about someone saying it's better (especially after experiencing the good stuff in Chicago!)

Try out Gino's East, Lou Malnati's, Uno's or Due's, Giordanos, and Peaquods for pretty good pizzas that will have you coming back for more. Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder is still my favorite and a bit off the beaten path.

In 2008-2012 when I was a resident at Cook county hospital, we had trauma rotation months.

Friday and Saturday night was notorious for penetrating trauma.

I distinctly recall one night to be easy peasy until 7p when the real stuff started rolling in.

All in all we shut down the entire surgical consult service for the hospital to help us out in the trauma bay. We saw 16 gunshot patients that night into 5am, intubated 7 of them and 7 went to the OR.

One person had 21 gunshot wounds... twenty one. Including a hole into the heel. Was shot with a barrage of fire as she was dropping down and still shot when down.

And if you ask any of them what happened? “I don’t know man I was just standing on a corner minding my own business....”

As far as I know, yes.

I intubated her and the trauma surgeon took care of the penetrating injuries.

I remember her cussing at everyone when she rolled in, I was like “good night”

She was pretty stable after that.

I saw a very interesting film called 22 Bullets that starred Jean Reno (the guy that played Leon in The Professional). It was subtitled but a good watch.

He was a retired organized crime guy who took revenge on his enemies who failed to assassinate him after shooting him 22 times.

Before that night I didn’t know it was possible to survive a dozen bullets (each pair of holes constitute 1 missile injury).... but if you’re lucky enough for it all to
either peripheral thoracic or extremity then you can survive it.

The key targets are head neck mid chest and abdomen.

Any of those and you’re likely a goner.
