Soul - Must Have Albums

I’d like to build up a section of Soul in my vinyl collection. I have a Sam & Dave and an Amy Winehouse album, but that’s about it. What do you think are the best Soul albums that should be in one’s collection?

This is a great song and the lead vocalist in the middle is absolutely gorgeous to boot.

Isaac Hayes, The Four Tops, The Delfonics, The Spinners, The Chi-Lites, Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, The Stylistics, Barry White, and here is one of my personal favorites:

Tavares - "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel"

Tavares is good stuff; didn't think of them -- good catch.

I am a little on the fencevis-a-vis Isaac Hayes -- but, yeah, he probably does belong on the list. If nothing else, and sorry if this seems trite, but Theme from "Shaft" really is a tour de force. Sounds great, too :)

Not sure what Sly & the Family Stone was - but it was good, no doubt. I should've put 'em on the list with EW&F et al.

Chi-Lites didn't quite make my "A" list, cut and I hadn't really thought about the Stylistics... but they're both fine, too.

Well Doc, your list made it pretty hard to come up with ANYTHING, but I did the best I could. :p

    All great selections.
Gil Scott-Heron "Winter in America" is an album i played the heck out of in the seventies. Maybe more towards soul/jazz fusion. "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is another good one.
    Al Green
    Graham Central Station-"Release Yourself"
Any Ohio Players LP (more towards funk)?
    The Staple Singers.
    Teddy Pendergrass

    So many out there.
I'll dig through my LP's later.

BT Express is another good pick before I forget.
  • Thanks, guys. I went back to a few of the shops I found and picked up Aretha, Marvin, Booker T and the MGs, Sly and a little more Sam and Dave. Appreciate the help. I’m still looking for solid used copies of some of your other suggestions.

    Are Stevie?

I was Wondering that myself. ;)

Some of the names I didn't mention to me transcend just "soul" -- I did skip James Brown, and I am not quite sure why. I think it may be because, although I admire his musical catalog, I don't particularly like much of it.

Now the Temptations --- much of their material was for the ages.[/i]
Strictly speaking from the perspective of my own taste, and - of course - de gustibus non est disputandum.

    Here's one, e.g. :)
