Do I need to upgrade from lsim 704c to 706c
Title says it all. I'm wondering whether I should take advantage of the Friends and family sale to upgrade my center from the 704c to the 706c? The 704c's have been so far matched with two 703 fronts and they've been doing pretty well together. I have, however, recently acquired two Lsim 705s to upgrade the fronts, with the intention of moving the 703s to the rear or using them as fronts in a strictly two-channel set-up... This is where the question of the of the 706c is coming up, especially because of the sale... I do not think I would bother replacing the 704c were it not for the sale... Still, before I pull the trigger, I want to know whether the 706c's will amount to a noticeable upgrade in the system... So far, I do have a lot of respect for the 704c, although I have not heard the 706c before. Kindly let me know what you think.
The present system is:
lsim 703 (2) + 704c (LCR)
lsim 702 f/x (2) surrounds
Once the 705s replace the two fronts, the 703s may be used as rear speakers or wides, or they'll service an independent 2-channel system.

The center channe is VERY important and IMHO THE most important channel.
The one thing I really like about the LSiM line is the higher center. That was one of the main complaints about the LSi line, that the LSiC just could used another driver or so.
I'd do it as you can sell your 704 and not be out nearly that much as if you had to pay full retail for the 706"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Thanks Enders: I'm inclined to do it too.

Yes. By upgrading you are helping the economy. It is your patriotic duty.

Okay Blue: Done! I decided to take one for the old economy, and, with that, hopefully, one small step toward sonic nirvana

Once a year half off sale and you have the means to take advantage. Why not go for it? Be ready for the size difference. Look at this diagram:

Yes the size diff is significant... I was looking for a cabinet that would fit the 706C and the 9" dimension seems really tight... I will put it on top if I must... I am thinking of this cab and putting the center on top... I kinda like it that way as it is higher and you can keep it off the wall

Okay, I'm reviving this thread to pose a related question:
So I nowI have two LSIM based systems:
1. LSIM705 (L & R) with 706c center (w/ 702 surrounds)
2. LSIM 703 (L & R) with 704c center (w/ 702 surrounds)
System 2 is now in a room that is temporarily occupied by guests, so I do not get to hear it much, and will not for a few months. However, I would like to take advantage of the present Friends and Family sale to replace the 704c in system 2 with the 706c, because I have come to appreciate the performance and sq of the 706c in recent months through repeated listenings, especially for HT dialogue and sound, and I am thinking I could be too spoiled now by the 706 to enjoy the 704c as much when I get to listen to the latter again. The problem is that I cannot be sure about this, because I can no longer tell how much better the 706c is over the 704c, since I am not able to audition them side by side under my present circumstances. To be fair, there was a time when I only had the 704c based system (system 2), and I used to find it very adequate for my needs. because I thought it matched the 703 fronts quite well, but I had not heard the 706c then.
So what do you all think : should I replace the 704c in system 2 or not with the 706c? I wish I could make the decision myself by comparing them side by side now, but as I have said, it is not very practical under my present circumstances, but I would not like to miss the opportunity presented by this sale if the upgrade would be worthwhile. I would like to benefit from the wisdom of forum members who have had the opportunity to compare the performance of the two center channel speakers in a more direct, immediate, and extensive manner.
Thanks for your help. -
I don't have any input, but I am also curious to learn more about this.

I have both a 704C and a 706C and prefer using the 704C. The main issues are size, and that I feel the 706C is on the borderline of needing separate amplification. I use a receiver to power everything but the main stereo front speakers which get powered by a separate amp. The 704C is a solid performing speaker in itself and I don't feel I give up anything meaningful using it over the 706C. The only thing it is lacking is bass extension of its big brother which can be run as a large speaker in a 5.1 music system. Regarding the size of the 706C, it is wider than the typical audio component and too tall to fit in my Salamander AV rack. It seems it was designed either to be placed on its own floor stand in a screen based system or sit on top of a rack in front of a wall mounted big screen

good points. the 706c is so good it could use it's own amp.
And yes, its BIG.
