never dreamed i would like this guy, kinda thought he was a hokey copycat, but i recently bought a greatest hits cd at a thrift store, love it.

Ordered a 180 gram "Early Years vol2" off ebay, still waiting for it.

What are your faves to be lookin out for, thanks in advance.

BTW, every internet search for his best has way different outcomes from each other.

Tom Waits is very much of an acquired taste -- I definitely like some of his songs, and a few of his performances, but not sure I can take a whole album of Waits in any phase of his career.

I realize that this isn't an answer to your question, and thus it's something of a threadcr@p (for which I apologize) but... depending on the contents of his 'greatest hits' album, I felt that it was worth sharing my opinion (which, of course, is no more and no less than... my opinion).

Not a threadcrap at all, and your opinion is always welcome in my corner.

Kinda think I might sample some stuff online before buying anymore.

The lp is not scheduled to arrive until the 5th thru 10th coming from ontario Canada.

That (being able to 'try before you buy' online) is one of the great luxuries of living in Modern Times! ;- )

Something about Tom Waits makes me think of Leonard Cohen... and vice versa.

Two of my favorites as well. Tom is an acquired taste I agree. But I like them all. Would suggest you start with his early stuff first. Closing Time & Heart Of Saturday Night, Enjoy !!!

There's a whole genre of singer/songwriter/performers whom I admire but that I don't quite... like. At least, not to the point of building collections of their work.

That said -- I spent a little quality time on YT watching Tom Waits selections... and maybe I like him & his music more than I thought I did!

(and, in full disclosure, I do own some Cohen, although he's one of them cats who may be best when covered).

Steve Earle -- gotta think about that one...maybe

Two albums I would start with would be Small Change and Rain Dogs.

I was just listening to Nighthawks At The Diner yesterday. Laughing out loud. It's quite entertaining. Plays like a live album with spoken word in between songs. Awesome.

I recommend Tom Waits, "The Asylum Years".
