Ready for music subs

Options
I just started looking at strictly musical subs. Right now I am liking the REL T5/T7 or perhaps a Micropro from Polk. My room is fairly small, so I would like a pair of 8 inch subs perhaps...any other suggestions?

Have a look at Rythmik's offerings. I have the F15HP paired with my lsim703s and love it. My DSW500 pro doesn't come close.

Check out the Velodyne MiniVee 8 and the SPL-800. Has to be one of the most capable 8's around in terms of small sealed cube options. Seems to be well controlled from the feedback and reviews...pretty pricey.

I like my velo deq 8r. They were on sale, not sure now. They have a remote, set up mic and settings that make em very musical.

IMHO 8" subs are overpriced. I'd for for a 10" as most 8" subs are in smaller packages and because of space contstraints they have to use more expensive parts to fit into the design.

Polks Micropro subs overall IMHO are a bit overpriced, so I'd go with REL or even a set of HSU STF-2's (the STF-1 is a 8" sub but for a small increase you can get the 2 which is a better bargain IMHO).

The HSU's are going to be your best low cost high music value IMHO....

+1 on the Hsu Research. I like mine for a smaller room.
Haven't had the pleasure of the Martin Logans.

Yeah, I agree about 8's in the home and does it make good sense to spend a lot for an 8" subwoofer? Would do at least a 10" or 12" if space allows for it. In general, the least the cone has to move to get a given output, the better. So, while some tend to think smaller subs for SQ, larger 15"-18" dual subs are actually better if one wants to feel the impact of a loud concert bass drum or the super low 18Hz tones of the Planet Krypton track for example.

Still, if space is really tight but one has space for something bigger than a 9"-10" micro cube...I too agree that the HSU is a good value. Their smaller subs perform....the smaller are the only ones I have actually listened to. Don't forget about the HSU made Outlaw Audio dual M8's for $548.

Yes the MPros are over priced... unless you can get them discounted or cheap...NewEgg sometimes either messes up the price or is dumping them for Polk and I got my 3K's for less than 900 each... that is a fair price for a 3K

Look for a used Velo SPL 1200...you'll thank me later. I'd personally stay away from an 8" sub. Minimum 10" but a 12" is where you want to be. Don't worry about the room size.

Thanks for the ideas...the more I think about it, I want to do this right the first time. I plan on keeping my 703s for awhile. Maybe a grand is my budget for one sub right now.

I have decided on a REL T 9 or R 328. I've always wanted a REL but will be looking for an open box for awhile to save $.

Nice musical subs the REL's. However, if the cost is an issue don't rule out cheaper options. MartinLogan and Paradigm offer some also that might work, The Paradigm SE sub is one to check out, Seen them going for under $500. Two of those plus their Perfect Bass Kits for $99 might be the ticket.

Two well placed, integrated, and tuned subs generally are better than a single more costly sub.
