AKG K701 Headphones

I bought these to A/B with my Sennheiser HD600 cans. The AKGs lost in a close call. The Senns were more dynamic and went deeper in the bass department IMO. $175 firm shipped in the CONUS. Shipping to Canada will be extra. I will take a personal check or a USPS MO. I do not do PayPal. Please post here and then PM me as these are also listed on another forum.

    Have a set of both myself (but the Q701s rather than K701s). The AKGs are nice H-phones but they need to have some power behind them to really show you what they can do. That's one reason why it's hard to compare them to the Senn HD600. The 600s are, in the end, far easier to drive and not as picky about what's driving them. Still the AKGs do have a wider, more open sound-stage. But I generally agree with your perceptions above.

    I thought that a dedicated headphone amp might help with that, but I don't listen to headphones enough to justify buying one. I used my Yamaha C-4 preamp, the Music Hall DAC in my sig, and a Grant Fidelity TubeDAC-09, which all have built in headphone amps and I noticed that the Sennheisers were louder than the AKGs in every instance.

    I should also add that although the Sennheisers were better IMO in a couple of areas mentioned earlier, the AKGs had a wider soundstage and better detail. Both pairs of cans are outstanding, but it comes down to personal preference. Just like every pair of speakers sound different, so do headphones.

    I can highly recommend these with a Musical Fidelity X-can v8 driving them. They're quite accurate in the bass department, but if you like your bass a little hot, they respond fine to a little eq'ing for the extra boom.

    The three headphone amps that I used drove the AKGs just fine. I just had to turn them all up a little louder than I did for the Sennheisers to reach the same volume level. I'm sure the MF X-Can amp would drive them very nicely too. There is one for sale over at AK.
