Is anyone else following this? It's like Formula 1 on water, amazing boats capable of 50+ mph......unheard of!!!

    Sort of. Its hard to miss out here. However, just like NASCAR has restrictor plates these boats can't race if the wind is over 20 knots. A Swedish boat capsized during the preliminaries and a sailor drowned by being trapped under the boat. Anyway, Oracle might pull of a comeback, and win this thing. They started two points (-2) in the hole since it was determined they cheated in the preliminaries.

    Of course if Oracle wins this area is not big enough for Larry Ellison's ego. :smile:

    Saw a brief clip on the news tonight. Those boats are cool, extremely hi tech. Once they get going it looks like they're riding on wings with the hulls completely out of the water.

    Looks like the US has to run the rest of the table to pull it out.

    The boats are quite capable of sailing at higher wind speeds, but for safety reasons they restricted the max wind speed, but I believe it has to be 24 knots or greater for a specified lenght of time.

    It was determined that one of the US 45's had added lead shot to the king post. It really had nothing to do with the 72's sailing now, but the international jury saw it another way. Complete BS to those who know.

    This entire America's Cup race is just a long list of throwing out the baby and keeping the bath water.

    The maximum wind speed limit is a combination of wind speed, tidal current speed & direction and time. It's totally computer controlled.

    There will only be one race on Tuesday. If NZ wins the first race, then it's all over. If US wins the first race, then NZ will use it's wild card to delay the second race to Wednesday.

    The wind Tuesday may very well exceed the max limit before the second race start time. So NZ won't play their wild card until the last second.

    The US won both races today with the US coming from behind in the second race to win by 54 seconds! So, it's all tied up at 8 each. The winner tomorrow takes the cup and the US is looking really good.

    I will say that New Zealanders have an amazing history of design achievement. John Britten comes to mind. He designed, fabricated most of the parts in his garage and built a motorcycle that took on the world's best, aka Ducati, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and won:

    The Kiwi's had a distinct advantage by sailing against all the other chalangers to win the right to sail against the USA. There was only team Oracle putting up a boat to keep the cup in the US. I hope Team Oracle can pull out a final win and send the Kiwi's packing. If you haven't seen these boats they are amazing. Check it out.

    I had not payed any attention to this event for a couple of decades. I just happened to be in front of one of the TVs at my office today when the race started. The boats/technology, the tactics, the comeback by Team Oracle. All of it. Truly amazing stuff. What a treat to watch. I thought USA was toast when it looked like one of it's pontoons pearled and New Zealand got the hole shot shortly after the race started. Spectacular comeback by USA indeed.

    Instead of Team USA beat Team NewZealand, it was more of Team USA Money beat Team Oceania.
    Come to find out Team Oracle, even though labeled USA, included only 1 USA citizen. This so-called USA team actually included 8 New Zealand sailors, and even a British who represented Great Britain in the Olympic. The team skipper is an Australian.
    Team New Zealand's roster listed 11 New Zealanders and 2 Australians.

    It looks like they modified the foils for the last race, making them more effective but a lot more sensitive to angle. Which almost turned the boat into a submarine at the first mark and several times the boat looked tippy (front to back).

    The movie "Worlds fastest indian", told of his life, working in his little garage, melting old ford and chevy engine parts to make his own engine parts for his old indian bike, then scrounging money to come to the bonneville salt flats to race in the time trials, only to be told due to safety requirements and a lack of preregistration, he could not run.

    Long story short, after feeling sorry for the old man and his slapped together bike, they let him run, all he did was set speed records that still stand.

    The series was amazing. I have followed the America's Cup since the early 70s and this "come from behind" win is mind bending to anyone who knows match racing. Team Oracle figured out something (after losing 8 of the first ten races) and kept the cup home for another few years. The technology of these boats is stellar, but the tactics employed by the skippers and crew will be analyzed, studied, and employed by future generations.
