Proposed System

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V650Ti
Fronts: Polk RTi4 or Polk RTi6
Centre: Polk CSi3
Rears: Polk RTi4
Sub: PSW303

Now having just recently listened to a PSW505 (not the 303) I was a little disappointed and expected something with a little more punch. Also they didnt have the RTi6's in store so am not sure whether to upgrade.

Could someone please offer me their opinion.

The room is about 36 square metres and I will be using the system for 70% movies, 30% music. But since I move around a lot I need a rather flexible system as the room size will vary.

First of all, welcome to the forum. :D Now as far as your proposed system goes, alot depends on your budget. I would suggest going after every ounce of the best gear for the buck you can get, up front. As far as the receiver goes, I think you could do much better. But, cost can affect your decision. So, what kinda funds do you think you have to work with?

    Thanks for the welcome.

My budget is approximately A$2000 but was willing to go to A$2500 for something that may be worth the extra expense.

Being from Australia the Yamaha RX-V650 usually retails for about AU$1299 but I can get it for AU$1000 as I know someone who works for a surround sound place.

I am actually putting off purchasing the receiver as I may be going to the US. The only concern being obviously the different operating voltages. In Australia it is 240V whereas in the US 120V. So if I purchase the receiver in US, I am not sure if it will work here.

Any thoughts on what receiver would work well would be appreciated.

I agree -- but with the RTi6 as fronts.
    - Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

Agreed, go with the RTi6 in front. Also since your system will primarily serve as a Home Theater, you may want to consider the FXi3 for the surrounds.

As for the Electronics, This may be a stupid question but is it safe to assume that that same brands sold in the USA are also available in Australia? Also what is the current exchange rate between USA$ and A$?

It's a different voltage and also different frequency. It would work with a voltage converter but for how long. Anything that is low powered, no problem, but I have heard from friends they have had a lot of problems with high energy consuming electronics.

If you can pick up a good receiver extremely cheap then I would go for it and give it a try.

Willow, I have been looking at prices in the US and in Canada, and the price difference is astonishing to say the least.

nebborjk, my basic rule of thumb is whatever it sells for in the US, double it and thats the cost here. The exchange rate seems to be hovering around US$0.70/1AU$. But we definately dont get all the brands that you guys do. I just spoke to the distributor of the ELT system in the US and it seems he is talking to someone here about a possible distribution channel. I was lucky enough to stumble across a Polk dealer, Klipsh is also here as to is Energy and B&W but all are very expensive compared to what they sell for in the US. But thats about it. Then you move on to the more common brands.

In regards to the receiver I am fairly stuck. I did want the Titanium RX-V650Ti but it seems the titanium versions are reserved for the US and Canada. Its very sad really.

Someone suggested I could get something better for the same price, any thoughts? If I spend more on the speakers, I may have to sacrifice a little on the receiver.

I can purchase the Yamaha RX-V650Ti in the UK for 400 pounds. I just so happen to have a friend flying there this Saturday. So that has solved a lot of problems for me.

But I still need to find a good 5.1 theatre system for a reasonable price. So far it looks as though the RTi6's are going to be the fronts, I will get the CSi3 as a centre and may have to hold off on the rest of the system for a time.

I am not sure I have found the right subby.

I wish. Need a much cheaper alternative.

I am not even sure I can get the SVS here in Australia. I recently found out we have a distributor of the HSU line. Emphasis on the phrase 'a distributor'.

I thought I would advise anyone that was interested that I have bought what was recommended ...

    Fronts RTi6
    Surround RTi4
    Center CSi3

All for AU$1080 including 5m of some crappy speaker wire.

I was listening to the setup with a B&W 12" sub and it sounded unbelievable. I need more money!

Anyway. I am very happy with the purchase, all I need now is a sub and a receiver. But I am half way there.
