Carver Silvers

I just bought a set of Silvers from my neighbor. Thought i was in for some great sounding music. I cant understand how such a nice looking Loudspeaker could perform so terrible!!! I must have my wires crossed? I almost started the crossover on fire just trying to break them in. The came with new woofers and rebuilt ribbons from my neighbor who is a wonderful person. I have not asked him his opinion yet i don't want to sound like the idiot that maybe i am. So i thought this would be a good way to introduce myself to you all. I Bi Amped them with no real improvement. Woofers distort at about 40 watts ribbons are OK but cant wake the neighbors. Anybody have this same problem?

Couldnt fine any info on your amp ? The carver are known to require a lot of clean, highcurent power. If under powered they sound terrible, from what ive heard from poeple who have owned them. I would start with at least 250/300 w highcurent to get them to really open up.Main Rig:

Did you listen to them at your neighbors before you bought them? Who replaced the woofers? Are you positive they are OEM replacements? Who rebuilt the ribbons? Who put it all back together again?
Describe the set up. Toe-in? 7 degree back angle? Distance from rear and side walls? Room size?Political Correctness'.........defined

From your other thread....I am powering them with 150 watts lows and 150 watts highs with active X-over at 150 Hz.
If you are using an active crossover and you state you almost set the Silver's crossovers on fire, you really have no idea what you're doing. You have to bypass the passive crossovers in order to use the active.Political Correctness'.........defined

Hello prds,
First of all, welcome to Polk's forum. There are plenty of members who have lot's of experience with Carver gear and they are generous and helpful. If you can give them a little more detail on the complete system I'm sure they can be of help.
Best regards, Ken -
There are so many issues here. For one if you have an external cross over (not an eq and real cross over) you have to do as Jesse said. You can't use the crossover inside the speakers if using an external active.
Also something would really have to be wired wrong if you are setting it on fire. Seriously stop. If it is smoking or you see a little red flame there is something wrong.
Next talk to your neighbor. Seeing he is your neighbor I'm sure he would rather see these run correctly then out on the sidewalk as firewood. Did he have them playing at his place? how was it set up? Did he use the external cross over? ASK HIM FOR HELP.
They are too nice of a speaker to be lit on fire because you were running something wrong. -
I always find it odd when someone comes here looking for help and then vanishes.Political Correctness'.........defined

That's true.........I also find it odd when someone ask for help and get no replies....in a helps forum.PolkAudioClyde -
What's really hilarious is when the mods remove all your BS posts while you're trying to get to 100....back to zero.Political Correctness'.........defined
