What are the properties of a good speaker base?

I've been seeing people doing things from a slab of concrete to purchased. I would like to get my LS70's off the ground a bit but how would the best way be to go about building them for added sound? Slight tilt, solid or honeycomb,4 point contact with the floor or frame, minimum height.....? I am going to be doing some custom finishing (to match a remodel) and want to know what the most important concerns are for a base design. I'll be doing it with maple solids just barely bigger than the speaker footprint.
