Tweaks for JVC XL-V311 CDP?

Just picked up this somewhat ancient JVC for my basement for about 7 dollars. Player seems OK but it has a couple of issues.

1. The tray sticks and does not often fully retract preventing the loader from picking up the CD. You can fuss with it by hand and it will load and play. Can I lubricate something here? And what might I be lubricating with what "product"?

2. There is a weird, subtle static sound coming from the high frequency end occasionally. Is that just the laser needing cleaning (it DOES not skip), or are some capacitors drying out on me (also reparable if that is the case). Whatever it is it doesn't sound like an impossible problem and it doesn't seem to be noticeable on some recordings. I heard it first on a Paganini violin concerto and I do NOT currently hear it on a jazz album? What's up with that?

Or, could it just be something as simple as "oxidation" on the R/L analog outputs?

Hope some of you DIY guys have some info for me!

Thanks,

The static sounds like a cap or other component at the end of it's life. Without a schematic I doubt you'll be able to narrow it down specifically. You could try cleaning the laser, but I doubt that's it. But, I always start with the simplest stuff first because you just never know.

Thanks for the quick response, Brock. I'm pretty sure schematics are available for this unit online. May have to check those out and pop the top. But, so far, it's been playing 'perfectly' on McCoy Mrubata's Firebird. No detectable distortion?

Ok, I do hear a bit of distortion now--faint but definitely there.

I guess more testing is in order. Then on to a diagnosis.

I just hit this player with a CD cleaning disc which has cleared up most of the problem. Still an occasional pop from the right side but a lot cleaner sounding than before!

May hit it again. But what about lubricants for the tray? Any thoughts there?

Thanks, fingers crossed for now. (Can't believe the cleaning disc cost me more than the player. lol)

I don't think it's the lens itself but certainly could be something in the pick-up electronics or the analog output stage. It seems to exhibit the same issue I had with my Nak pre. There were two caps that were bad, as in, reached their useful life. The caps were about $8-10 and the labor was $96 + sundries and disposal or chemicals, etc.

I believe the best tweak would be to tweak it by replacing it.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
