I like the benefits of Audyssey calibration, but how does this compare to calibrating a home theater system via an SPL meter?

My Denon 3806 has Audyssey MultEQ, and it's 5 yrs old. it works so well, the distance that it measures between listeners and speakers is almost perfect, down to .x of an inch. I can't imagine how it can be more accurate.

All an SPL meter can do is match speaker levels. Audyssey does quite a bit more. Can't really compare the two. I had Audyssey on my Onkyo 885, never did like what it did for the sound of music.
