Onkyo TX-NR809 or Yamaha RX-A3000 amp?

I'm building a new 5.1 surround sound system for my bonus room to compliment a new Panasonic 65" TV I just bought, but I'm having trouble deciding what A/V receiver to buy. Right now I've purchased a Pioneer VSX-1021-K, but I'm considering getting an even nicer receiver because of some of the great Black Friday Deals that are out there right now. New Egg has the Onkyo TX-NR809 on sale for $650 and the Yamaha RX-A3000 on sale for $900. Those both seem like much nicer receivers than the Pioneer I just bought.

For right now my receiver will be driving monitor 60's for the front channels, monitor 30's for the rears, a CS1 for the center channel and a PSW505 sub. In the future thought I'm thinking about upgrading to a pair of rti a7's for the front, fxi a4's for the rear and a csi a4 for the center. It would be nice if I don't have to upgrade the receiver again when I buy these new speakers, but I'm not sure when I'll actually upgrade.

I've done a lot of research but I'm just not sure what to do here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a yamaha rx-v2400, no problems in eight years. That being said, if i had to choose one of your two options i would go with the onkyo. You may want to consider pioneer sc series. Last years models can be had at a reasonable cost.

I have the sc-37 and love it. You should be able to find one for well less than the 900 i would think.

Never used them but kinda gives you an idea. This would power the monitors no problem as well as any future speakers you may look at getting. I have been very pleased with my sc and planning on getting the sc-57 when i build my HT room.

The sc series should have no issue driving your current speakers or the rti series. If your planning on adding an amp down the road I'd go with the onkyo, very user friendly and a good eq on the 809, if your not planning an external amp soon, the sc series may be the way to go. Good luck!

The price of $650 on the TX-NR809 on new egg is a steal. That's about the refurb price you would pay at Accessories 4 Less. Normal price on that receiver is around $900 - $1000. I just bought one from amazon because of this price. Time to upgrade the 707 I have had for 6 years.

I looked at quite a few other receivers before I did this, but none could match the features for the price of the TX-NR809. Also, I should mention that my viewpoint might be a bit different from yours. I'm not going to drive any speakers with the AVR, it's going to be Pre / Pro only.

I have had a Yamaha A3000 since last April and paid $1400 for it so for $900 I would call it a no brainer. I really like it and have had zero issues with it. I was using a Denon 3805 before that that still works perfectly but I wanted to upgrade and I kept reading about issues people were having with the newer Denon's. Before that I had a Yamaha DSP-A1. I have no complaints with sound quality for either music or movies. It plays plenty loud but at some point I would like to add an external amp so that as funds permit I can move to seperates.

You can regularly find the 809 at < $700 but $650 is a great deal. Can't imagine it will ever sell for much less than that.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone.

I've decided to purchase a Pioneer SC-35, since so many people on the forums appear to love that receiver. It's selling on Amazon right now for around $900. Seems like a good deal to me so I'm going to jump on it.
