Anyone have any experience with this product? Looking to use the iPad for somethign other than an e-mail reader. Looks interesting, reviews are mixed.

I would only be using it with the TV (55 Inch LCD, VIZIO) and the SC-27 I just picked up. Possibly would look to use with the PS3, assuming the adaptor is compatible.

That looks pretty sweet. Is it just me, or does it look like it incorporates a guide into the "remote"? If that is in fact the case - the coolness factor just went up.

From what i saw/read, only on the ipad, iphone/ipod it does not, but yes, i think that looks like a pretty nice option as well.

The biggest issue for me is that it needs BOTH a line of sight to you components AND a wall outlet for the AC adapter, that scenario does not exist in my living room. If it would run on batteries I would love to have it even though I already have a harmony remote that I like.

It does need power, but the device itself communicates over a wireless network, you can control from anywhere that you get wireless signal from your own network. So you could put your gear in a closet with this and control it elsewhere. It also comes with an IR blaster so you can make sure everything gets the signal in your closet. I think i am going to go ahead and try it out, doesn't look like anyone has played with one of these yet. Here was a good review that i found:

The device communicates with your iDevice over the network, it communicates with your components via IR. The last time I checked, IR needs some line of sight to your equipment, I don't see how this can possibly be any different, but I'll look into it further because it would be nice to have.

I bought one and will try it out when I assemble my new stand this weekend. I know a couple people on other forums who have it and they say they have had no issues with the IR. They just have the puck sitting on top of their stands and use the IR blaster if they need it.

The device needs line of sight to the equipment (or the IR emitter), however, your ipad/iphone/ipod communicate with it over your wireless network, you do not need line of sight to the puck. So hide the puck anywhere you want with your equipment and your wireless will communicate with the device.

I have the similar Redeye from ThinkFlood, and because the design of the emitter, you don't actually need line of sight. The multiple LED emitters effective send a signal in all directions and with reflections it will get almost anything where the IR receiver is not blocked. I have my emitter in the top part of a cabinet and my AVR is in shelves below. As long as the doors are not in the way of the AVR, I have never had any issues. (With any decent remote, you can usually point it backwards and it will still work due to reflections.)

Now I could not actually find the number of LED emitters in the Harmony Link listed anywhere, but I assume that they are using a few to give the 360 degrees coverage.

OK, bought it, and it is a LOVE / HATE relationship.

Number 1, if you get it, immediately install FIREFOX, don't try anything else. I spent 2 hours scouring threads and clearing cookies/cache and finally got it to work.

Number 2, that still may not work, as it took me a dozen tries after that and what actually ended up working was to not have the device plugged in USB until it said, can't find your device. Something about it makes it hang if you have it plugged in prior to that, it took me another couple of tries of unplugging it from the USB port and plugging it back in to get it to configure and work.

So 2 hours to get it put my WEP key into it and log on to my network, phew, now on to configuring the actual pieces of equipment in my basement. Pretty easy, as a matter of fact it took me longer to find my TV model number than to do any adding of equipment, I added the SC-27, the 55 Inch Vizio, the Dish box and my PS3.

Actually using the unit, ok, i want to be able to have the remote control on the screen, give me all the damn buttons, so far, i can't do that. I can scroll through a list of commands but haven't spent enough time to see where i can put the control in the layout i want to use. Maybe I will look through this a few times and figure it out. The interface on the iPad is great other than the actual remote control section, didn't put it on the iPod Touch my kids play with yet, but i think i will. The Guide for Dish works well, can see a graphic of the show, put your favorites into a group and only see the handful of channels you listen to as well.

I have the unit and my gear under the steps in my basement, out of sight, there is a repeater with a decent amount of cord that can be stretched out to reach the TV and the main unit communicated with everything else well. Power on/power off and all of that were perfect, i just want to be able to arrange the control the way i want, it may do this but i had too many things going on to use it.

For 100.00, its a decent control, it could use some improvements in software and customization. Also, the frustration factor is pretty high, if you don't want to jiggle it smack it and walk away mad for a while, you might skip it, but if your patient enough to work with it, it works. It is also pretty cool to be able to turn your gear on from the second floor of the house, It would make setting up a different room really easy and controllable from anywhere.

I've read in several reviews that you cannot change the control layout. maybe I can live with that, I don't know.

Tell me about how it works with your equipment in terms of the IR part. I'm still wondering how well it's going to work all my equipment if it's sitting on the same rack. Here's my setup, given your experience do you think it would work well sitting somewhere on that rack?

I think it would be fine, currently my stuff is in a tall rack with frosted shelves and the main unit is sitting on top of my SC-27 (the SC-27 is too big for the shelves so it sits on top of the unit) and then everything else is below that, i have the IR repeater ran off to the side temporarily till i drill a hole and mount it on the other side of the stairs. I haven't played around with placement much to see where i could hide the main unit, but it is really about 1/2 inch over the lip of my SC-27 and none of my gear is to the front of my rack and it sees all of it.

I may play around with it some tonight on placement and see.

I just wanted to say that I bought the logitech harmony link and to be honest, I dont know why it is getting all the bad press. It took me all of 30 mins to set it up and set up my activities. I absolutely love it. Yes it could be more customizable, I agree. I am a novice when it comes to universal remotes but it was so easy to setup. I can control my system from my iPad, my 4S, my wifes 4, and my old 3GS. You can be anywhere in your house and control things. You cant beat that. It also gives you everybutton your remotes feature so you really can get rid of all of your remotes with this. Great product. I waited and waited before I bought a universal remote and I am glad I did because for $99, it was great addition to my house. Like I said earlier, I am a novice, so what may be great to me may not be great to to others. I have a wooden stand with doors. I have my link in the center of my stand on top of my marantz prepro. It controls everything. There was no need to use the blaster as it turns everything on and off. through the different shelves and walls in my stand.

Most of the bad press stems from trouble actually setting the device up on the network, I just happened to get past it. Some people are lucky like yourself and get it to work without any trouble, others never get it to work and I spent a good amount of time doing it. All of my problem setting it up are attributed to the actual process to put something as simiple as a WEP key into the unit, this shouldn't be nearly as complicated or difficult as it was. The software just kept locking up. I finally worked around it, and after that it works well. It would be just as easy for them to let me customize the layout as it is for them to provide a stock scheme for everything. I did move mine around a bit last night and other than actually hiding the unit, had no problems with placement. My TV is around the corner is the only reason i needed the IR blaster at all.

It does work with with wifi from the link to your ipad or iphone. The link shots IR signals so that it can control everything. I am going to buy the ps3 adapter so that I can get it to turn that on and off also.
