My first surround sound receiver.

I just bought my first surround sound receiver! I have 4 two channel systems and this is my first step into the 21st century. (Actually two of my receivers were made in the 70s). I bought a Denon AVR 1312 which has 5 separate 75 watt discrete outputs and 7.1 capability with a separate amp. I only have a 13 X 13 room so I think I'll have enough power. I have Polk fronts and a Velodyne sub and my son is loaning me a Denon center channel speaker and 2 Denon rears, but I'm sure I'll upgrade. Any suggestions for speakers for a small room?

A budget is in order here! Which Polks do you have up front? I would think locating a matching center would be in order first. When I finally got a matching front three, the difference was huge, a nice clear soundstage in movies with nothing standing out that bothered me. You should be fine if you can get the front stage in order and continue running your denon's for surrounds, as the match for surrounds isn't that important.

Welcome to surround sound. Frankly though, your receiver choice in surround mode will not yield 75 watts each channel and I don't believe you can add an amp to that receiver because of the lack of pre-outs. Plus you won't have any auto set up options in that receiver.
In your search for speakers, stay with efficient 8 ohm speakers that are not too large. I'm thinking the monitor line up from Polk would suit the room, and your receiver well. Good luck on your search and let us know what you end up with.HT SYSTEM-

Thanks for the replies. I have TSi 100s in the front and I'm thinking someday they could be rears. I'm not looking to spend a lot and my son is always finding amazing deals on Craig's list, like a mint condition Polk RM 7500 system for 75 bucks. (1769.95 list price) The fun will be in the search.

Update: I went to Best Buy to pick up the receiver and the box was dented. I had them open it and the receiver was destroyed. The manager gave me a free update to a 1612 so that was nice. I am learning a lot about surround and it's a blast! I'm going to buy a CS10 center channel speaker for 109.00 at Crutchfield. I wanted to ask you experts a question though. I used to use the high level inputs to my sub and the high level outputs to the front speakers and I had great bass using my two channel amp. Now I am not crazy about my bass levels using the sub output and I was wondering if I would be losing anything by setting the front speakers to large and turning the subwoofer output off, and using the high level inputs again. Thanks!

I got all my speakers at newegg. They were cheaper there than crutchfield, amazon, just about anywhere else. And can't beat the free or 2.99 shipping on 60lb boxes.Pn51D550
