pre-amp comparison

Hi guys, for you guys w/ experiance and use and I need a comparison. As some of you know my 2-chl power is an Adcomgfa555 w/ an Onkyo P301 pre. So I have been looking at pres to maybe change out the P301 to either a Mac C-28 which I still cannot afford or 2 other models I have noticed all over e-bay.The fisrt would be the Pioneer Spec 1 pre going for a range of 250 and up w/ bidding of course upping things. The second I was looking at would be the Phase Linear Autocorrelation pre-amp. These are all over the place and again I'm not ready to make the jump but just in case wonders of wonders I see one at a garage sale which is the better pre. Any advice here, and know I'm not that impulsive and need you guys input.Also I do remember what most of you thought of Phase Linear as an amplifier w/ less than stellar reviews but this is a pre-amp so the same thoughts might not apply...
Not to drag things out both these models are rack mountable which would work for my rack.

    At best a step sideways at worst a step backwards. PL gear is nothing to write home about, plus unless it's been in the shop recently they are getting very long in the tooth and might not be 100% within spec.

    You could do alot better.....
    You can buy pre's all day on Audiogon under 4 bones that would spank what your looking at bro.

    Thanks , that's the exact advice I was looking for . I really do not like listing presenting a long list of pres for a thumbs up or down so when I do spot one that might be worthy of my set-up and w/ some approval of you guys this will be the way I will start to look at pres.

    decal , approval might be the wrong word but I'm limited w/ experiance so a thumbs up or down might help. That said I would try to audition the pre before buying unless it gets A+ across the board.Thanks for the link.

    well almost,,, it seems like it just sold,,this would really smooth out that adcom to your liking.Might wanna' shoot the seller a pm just in case the deal does not happen. Just my .02. good luck

    While that Dared is sweet for the price, I dunno if LW is up to the task of tubes yet.
