Hey guys,
I have made the decision to get a screen innovations screen and I can get a grey screen or white screen for the same price, I am running a epson 8700ub I am going with a 110 16x9 screen.
The gain on the grey screen is .85
http://www.screeninnovations.com/screen-materials/lunar-hd-85-gray/
The gain on the white screen is 1.1
http://www.screeninnovations.com/screen-materials/gamma-hd-11-gain/
I would sometimes want to watch sports with a few background lights on. I am also wondering on the viewing angle(how much it would suffer with a grey screen)
My room is wide, but not extremely wide...roughly 17-20ft i guess i am wondering about angle viewing.
Is it possibe to have to much gain and get hotspots with the white screen? could this happen in my setup, I am at the far range for my projector, however it is in the acceptable range for throw distance.
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks
Jaritta

I say if you want sport then gray is it . I have had a white with my epson but changed to gray because a projector light is its own worst enemy . My gray screen stops the light from wandering onto the white ceiling and lighting up the room and it also cuts down the side wall reflections .All this makes a more punchy contrast and more immersible experience for both light and dark room viewing conditions
If I had a dedicated viewing room all done in black then I would go for the more color accurate white fabric -

I disagree..........keep reading though. Grey will only improve blacks. If you have problems with light spill its not due to screen material. Its due to light reflecting off of WHITE walls and ceiling. Get some blackout fabric on your screen wall and that alone should help you out alot.
Op has a 8700UB which will do superb blacks without the help of a grey screen. A bright white screen will just add to ansi contrast giving you more "POP" (3D like effect) in your image. Anything in the 1.1 to 1.4 gain will work just fine, in your case the SI Solar HD, Carada Brilliant White Criterion, or Stewart Studiotek 130 screen.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I have an epson 8500 with similar blacks .A projected image will light up a normal viewing room especially if the ceilings white . For me the gray darkens up the room and improves blacks giving me more immersion during the movie

Haha, you guys are having the same arguement that i am having in my head.
Shep, have you seen the si performance series??
Either- do you guys feel as though you will have a narrowed viewing angle with the grey screen rather than the white one????Harman kardon signature 2.1 amp

Like polkfarmboy, I have the Epson 8500UB. However, I would definitely stick with the 1.1 gain screen over a screen with a gray basecoat. Blacks are already nice and inky on the Epsons, and the gain on the white screen will very likely let you tweak things to extend the bulb life. I just got a new bulb in mine (after my first one died at about 2,800 hours), and to get the recommended 16ftL of light at the screen, I only have to run it in Eco mode. As the bulb ages and dims, you can bump it up to full power to get some of the brightness back, which is nice. Go with a gray screen and you sacrifice that right out of the gate, with the trade-off being deeper blacks. However, it also cuts overall light output/white, which is kinda' counter to the point of getting a light-cannon like the Epson.
But first and foremost, I say see if the company will send you samples of both materials and judge for yourself before buying the screen.Equipment list:

I'm currently on my second in the JVC. Gaming on the big screen is highly addictive. I watched Sucker Punch in the theater room and it was awesome.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

In fairness... 2,800 hours... in 13 months. I've used the s$%t out of it!
The good part is that thanks to Epson extending the warranty on their bulbs for that year's models to the 2 years that the projector itself has, they overnighted me a replacement bulb for free. And now, it looks as amazing as it did out of the box. Can't say enough good things about Epson, especially compared to the HORRIBLE customer service I got with my Sanyo PLV-Z2000 (which I also put over 6,000 hours on across two bulbs before I sold it).
Sherard's right. Gaming + blu-ray + HD cable + 100" screen = I took the 42" set out of the room because it wasn't getting used anymore.Equipment list:

Thats good too hear and if your doing all that then you should go white a white 1.1 gane like the others here have advised
Next thing you gota do now is bring home a couple of subs to blow the roof of the theater -
Haha, I am lucky. I work for a av dealer and am able to get all of my equipment for an unbelivable deal. My boss is a rel dealer but can also get some velodyne subs. I could get psw 505 but i am looking to get some subs that are just as good if not better for cheaper because of the fantastic discount....any suggestions??? I was thinking rel but i am afraid that the t5 may not fill the room with sound, have any of you had any experiance with the velodyne units??Harman kardon signature 2.1 amp
