Receiver settings

So I just got everything set up for my home theater. I ended up with TSI200's for fronts, CS10 center, and rci55 in wall for the rears. I have an old Yamaha sub that I will replace soon, and I am using a pioneer vsx-1020k reciever. My question is after I ran the autosetup, i checked all the speaker levels and distances and they seem good. There are numerous audio presets to choose from and I want to know what I should use for watching tv, blu-rays, listening to cds, streaming audio etc. There is also an auto surround mode, direct and pure direct. I don't know what the differences are. The manual explains what these setting do but it does not say in which instance to use them.

Auto selects the correct sound decoder and uses that - depending on which signal is coming in.
Direct and Pure direct don't apply any settings, what comes in, goes out. As little or no processing.Main Surround -

So I should pretty much use Auto for everything? What is the purpose of the other settings?

Personal preference
I have the VSX-32 and use THX Cinema for TV/Movies. Not sure if the 1020 has THX modes -
It doesn't, I believe the 1120 is the one with THX Select2Main Surround -
