AVR to TV Picture

Just recently my tv has started to display a "soap opera" type picture. It is doing it on both HD as well as regular cable. It does this when i run the hdmi from the dvr straight to the tv but usually not after i run it into the avr. Blurays seem to also be doing this slightly as well.

Recently switched to an elite sc-37 and hasn't been a problem till just recently. My other setup is listed below. Has anyone else had any situations like this??

    what do you mean by "soap opera" picture?

    is it grainy? is it muted in color? what do you mean? have you tried different settings on the TV? Have you tried different settings on the AVR? Have you tired a different input or outputs on the AVR as well as the TV? have you had any other changes in the set up? Have you made sure all the cables are all the way into the connectors etc.

    Polknewby - do you have the TV's motion function on? ie. the 120Hz/240Hz business? On my LG it's called 'TrueMotion' - it'll be called something similar on your Samsung. Go to your TV's picture menu and check if it is off. If it's not, then turn it off and let us know if that fixes it.

    The motion comp feature tends weird people out who aren't used to it.

    Of course, if it was this it would happen whether or not you're running the video through the AVR first ... but who knows..maybe your receiver's video setting are canceling it out somewhat.

    I got the "everything looks like a soap opera" complaint and when I asked my guests to elaborate they stated "Everything just looks so real like they are really there". I offered to scratch up a piece of plexi-glass and stick it in front of the TV but no one bit. (I have pretty much the same tv)

    You might want to make sure that you are not in store display mode. Another option is to try calibrating your colors. I have been debating having a pro calibrator come in since I got my tv but the discs seem like a smarter cheaper option.

    I would like to hear more about this "soap opera effect", try and put the difference that you are seeing into words if you can. My one thought is that you are seeing a smaller range of color that may be corrected in calibration or picture mode adjustment.

    Also remember that some modes on these tvs will change the back light based on the amount of light in the room, so If you recently started leaving the blinds closed that might cause the picture to dim a little bit.

    Idiot me, I thought by the "soap opera comment" , you were referring to it looking like it was shot on tape ,not film.

    I don't know of a good way to explain the soap opera look - but I've seen it with my own eyes. My parents have an LCD, that the only thing I can guess is that the sharpness is up way too much? I won't go as far to say that it looks "too real". I've got my set calibrated (Panny 50VT) so it's got a damn good picture. My parents just looks.... odd. Not sure how to describe it. Almost as if everything is in technicolor? It looks "real", just not "natural". Kind of like the difference between a TV show, and a handheld cam (even the "handheld" on a show when they show a home movie on a sitcom)

    I've seen tv's on disply at BestBuy that had the soap opera effect. It's strange.

    Sorry it's taken some time to respond- but for me just doesn't have the natural effect it has had. Feels like I'm sitting in the corner of the set as they tape it. What odd though is it just started the past week or so. I've had the tv for a year or so and hasn't been an issue up to this point when I run through hdmi.

    I'm going to try and unplug the hdmi cords tonight and see if that doesn't 'reset' the connections.

    Zaigrith- do you recommend one calibration disc over another for our model? And I wasn't aware the amount of light in the room changed the amount of light- I know my uncles lg has an 'eye' that does this but was unaware that this model did it.

    Glowrdr- have you ever had any issues with the sc-37 upconversion? For exame running the 1080/24 setting on hd cable? Seems when I do it has a somewhat choppy motion and if I put it on auto or pure it will cause sports tickers at the bottoms of the screen to become distorted sometimes. I have my tv auto motion on smooth for fast moving scenes.

    It can be turned off on your display but might cause motion blur.

    Each Manufacture calls it something different for their displays.

    Every time I see new TVs on display at Costco, etc I notice this - the pictures look really nice, but the motion nearly makes me sick. Really weird.

    I much prefer running my video sources direct to the HDTV via HDMI.

    I actually can't really say that I've noticed anything like that. I guess I haven't played around with the settings while connected to my HD sat box though. Everything I changed, I did while using the Spears and Munsil cal. disc so that would have been true 1080/24 for the testing.

    Plus, not sure I'd run into the distortion issues as mentioned by Steveinaz - we've both got plasma's. I'm sure there are some features that I'm missing though, I just may not have found them yet. I'm one of those people that spent $1200 on a DSLR and use it on auto 80% of the time. lol
